The review sounds exactly like the impression I got back when I watched the first 3 episodes fansubbed and quit so as to spend my time on more worthwhile shows. Even though I'm usually a fan of this kind of thing, it sounds like I won't be missing much if I don't give it a second chance....

Does anyone else notice a resemblance of the character on the DVD cover to Ed Elric from FMA, or is it just me?

I saw the hook behinde his head and mistook it for a braid. I thought he really was Ed for a second.

Sounds like a poor man's Scrapped Princess with the blending of magic & technology...I never checked out the fansubs on Elemental Gelade, as I never was too interested in the series. This review serves to confirm that EG is pretty much a straightforward shounen fantasy action without very much going for it, especially if the animation and artwork are inconsistent.

Not only does Coud look like Ed, he acts just like him too. Same feisty-but-inwardly-sensitive personality. Pretty much the only differences in their personalities can be chalked up to relationships-since one of them's traveling with his brother and the other's traveling with his (potential) girlfriend.
I also watched a couple of eps of Gerade before getting bored with it. It's not a poorly told story, it's just that there's really nothing new about it at all...especially if you've played the old Dreamcast/Gamecube game Skies of Arcadia, which has a very similar setting.

I'll post here to represent someone who did watch this show - the comparison to Skies of Arcadia is pretty apt, even in the story style, which is fairly generic until they finally manage to get the ball rolling late in the series. Even then there's nothing that's too far out there, but they do manage to find a somewhat different direction to go.

Considering the series was created by the mangaka for Star Ocean: The Second Story, there are a lot of parallels with the Blue Sphere universe.
Oh, and Ren's sleepy voice... It's really intentional because she's SUPPOSE to be sleepy. That's her character.

Elemental Gelade is a very good series. It's not in my top ten, but just below. I've seen all the episodes and I thought it was cool. It blended comedy/drama/romance/action perfectly. I thought it was a lot better than other series like it. Take for example Scrapped Princess. It just sucked, it's not the worst anime I've seen, but it was bad. Story was boing, the characters were even more boring, and the music was bad. On the other had Elemental Gelade was very well made. For example the relationship between Cou and Ren was perfect. The story was solid. The music was great, I just loved the music.
Oh yes one more thing. I've seen every episode and the movie of Fullmetal Alchemist and COU IN NOW WAY LOOKS LIKE ED ELERIC OR ACTS LIKE HIM!

The only thing I liked about the anime was the intro...My biggest disappointment though was Yuki Kajiura as it's the first time I didn't like her music at all. It wasn't the lack of vocal songs, but I honestly wouldn't of known she was responsible for the music if I didn't look it up >>. I might consider buying it once a boxset is released in the future...

No kidding.
That's pretty shameless right there.

Now, it's not that bad...
I like Elemental Gelade. Despite being completely average in every way, it does excactly what I want it to- entertain me with pretty pictures and a catchy opening tune. I will be happily lapping this up as it releases.

When I first saw that picture, I thought "Wah? Is that some kind of FMA spinoff?" They look so much alike I'm surprised it's not some kind of copyright violation.
