I haven't seen the anime, but this sounds like an interesting novel series. I'm used to paying $10 for a book, so the price doesn't bother me.
EDIT: According to RightStuf, the novel is 264 pages, which seems like a good bit more than 'just over 200.' |

That figure includes:
*10 pages of translation notes; *17 pages of preview for the next novel; *3 pages of afterward; *18 pages of illustrations, table of contents, a statement about translation authenticity by Seven Seas prior to the text actually starting; *Several pages at the end that are blank, adverts, and "about the author" stuff. Of the 264-page total, only 205 pages or so are actual "novel." |

Hmm, even though Key has already stated the contents of the book (with only 205 or so page of the 264 to be the actual novel itself), I won't mind.
 The price doesn't seem that bad, either; especially after spending $17.95 or so on the hardcover edition of Socrates in Love. Great series, that was; however, it was a bit overpriced, in my opinion.

When I saw that there was someone translating and releasing the Boogiepop novels, I nearly screamed with joy! I had honestly never expected someone to have the guts and will to do this. I am forever gratefull to Seven Seas for doing this. Finally, I can read the novels that spawned such an interesting anime!
While some might be hesitant to buy this novel, due to length and price, trust me when I say it is certainly worth it. Just the little I have read to this point (I literally ran out to buy it as soon as I read the review and confirmed that my local Borders had it on the shelves) has cleared up some of the things I was confused about in the anime. It's also given me a slightly better understanding of Boogiepop his/her-self. It even gives a strange-yet-understandable reason as to why the name is Boogiepop; when you read the line, you can actually kinda-sorta understand. I also like the way Boogiepop comes across as a bit more human, with hints of emotion (of course that could just be the way the character sees Boogie at that part in the story). If you loved the anime, then you will truely love the first novel! If Seven Seas continues with what it did for this first novel, then count me in for the long haul!

This is one of the major points of confusion with the anime, actually, and unless you've read the novels it's almost impossible to notice.
Even in the anime, Boogiepop does show hints of emotion, while Boogiepop Phantom does not -- and the latter gets much more screen time. |

whats the reading level of this thing? the page count is pretty short, so i'm hoping its not an easy read that i could breeze through in like a day.

The Boogiepop series started the "light novel" trend in Japan (okay, it was an explosion). In this case, a light novel is sort of like what a young adult title is for us in North America. That's not always exact as there are light novels for kids, teens and adults in Japan, but for Boogiepop...it's like a young adult title. The content itself focuses on teens in high school, so that should give you an idea for the age group.

Picked it up and finished it. I thought that the novel was better than the movie. I'm looking forward to the 2nd novel.

What level of "light" are we talking about here? Is it as light as .hack//AI BUSTER (1 or 2) from Tokyopop was? Because that was a very light reading in my opinion, and I think I only enjoyed it because of the subject matter, not the writing. While I know Boogiepop isn't very high level reading, is it a little more competent than the .hack novels were?

I think the review basically answers that, but just to clarify: the term "light novel" has less to do with the book's content than with the market it is aimed at. "Light Novels" in Japan are books aimed at teenagers, bridging the gap between adult novels and manga.
But just as men enjoy shojo manga and girls enjoy shonen manga, the target audience in no way defines who will actually enjoy reading it. I'm 26, and I'm a huge fan of the Boogiepop series; heck, my mother liked Boogiepop and Others. It's a work of genre fiction, but it is a very well written work of genre fiction, and I don't accept the idea the genre works are in any way "lighter" or "inferior" to more literary works in the first place. I have and obsolutely love the anime series. I haven't seen the live-action, but my gf was pretty mad when she found out that all my books had "pictures"... so I think I'll pick this one up. I saw it at Borders the other day and had no idea it's exclusive there until August. Isn't it priced at like $8?

Light enough that you can finish it in an evening, but challenging enough that doing so will make you feel satisfied. I haven't read the .hack novels myself, but I can say that Boogiepop is harder than the FMA novels (and most other light novels based on an adventure franchise), but not as wordy as the Vampire Hunter D novels. |
