Half of this season seems to be series derived from Devilman (Crybaby). The other half is Cardcaptor Sakura (Clear Card). I've never seen a season this split into two camps, let alone one in which the originating series of each camp revived to lead the charge.
Also, it's fairly interesting that a lot of the "changes" Crybaby is so praised for are from the original manga. Honestly, Crybaby's main distinction is staying much closer to the source material than predecessors. |

I once watched the anime a long long time ago, and pretty much thought it was THE biggest piece of shit I had ever seen (well, at the time anyway, although it's certainly still in the running even today.) And this was back when I was in my beginner "anime actually dares to be violent? Cool!" phase. (My first anime ever was 3x3 Eyes.) Then out of bile fascination/morbid curiosity, I read some of the manga later, and.... found it pretty decent, actually, never mind being completely different from the anime. The whole "completely different ballpark" aside when it comes to Takahata and this particular franchise, I think if he'd really make a Violence Jack anime, it'd probably be much closer to the manga. And certainly not a huge pile of manure. |

In earnest, I fully expect that Isao Takahata's Violence Jack would easily be more watchable than Pom Poko...

I've heard quite a bit on 'Violence Jack' but have never watched it. But I'm going to have to grab our copy and watch this nightmare of morbid curiousity. LOL!! |

I think even when I was younger, I would not have been able to take this level of swearing very seriously. If there was an anime equivalent to MST3K, Violence Jack would've been great for it.
I read that as "Porn Poko." It'd be right in line with stuff inspired by Devilman Crybaby. |

Just the intro? Why not the whole thing! Hentai probably isn't the right direction but I would throw a lot of money to see Yamamoto direct a yuri anime. |

Yeah this is kind of insulting, not to mention ignorant. I'm shocked there's no dig at Apocalypse Zero or Birth here as long as they were badmouthing things undeservedly. Those shows fall into the same category of "We didn't watch it but we hear it's bad" like Mad Bull 34. |

What? I love all of that stuff. All of it. Calling Devilman "shlock" isn't an insult, it's the truth - it also happens to be high art that I think belongs in any museum in the world. Those two things aren't mutually exclusive at all. I feel the same way about most of this stuff. You mentioned Birth - that one especially. I just did a podcast where I spoke with the folks handling the marketing for the original Devilman manga and suggested they court the fashion world and high art crowd with it, doing high-end gallery exhibitions and merchandise. This is where I think Devilman places culturally. I also think it's shlock. Appreciation of this stuff as art does not have to be accompanied by limitless superlatives. I just appreciate this stuff in a way differently than you do. I've been in love with anime for 23 years and that entire time I've had guys like you telling me I hate it because I don't just heap praise on it, and I'm kinda done with that. |
