This sounds strangely like episode 99 of Urusei Yatsura... I guess he wanted to expand on the ideas in that episode he directed 20 years ago

It's not an anime.

Yes, I saw that. I'm not sure what you're trying to add with that comment.

Does this have anything to do with Red Spectacles? The guy at the top of the poster looks like the character that was in the stand-and-eat soba place.

I think Gatsu is referring to the fact that the ANN entry calls this Oshii's new anime. I was under the impression that this was going to be mostly live-action and only partially animated, but one of the Prod IG pages calls it "Mamoru Oshii's latest animated feature film," so I'm not sure anymore. (I think there was an announcement that Toshio Suzuki would be appearing in the film, which makes it seem like it would be live-action.)
I don't remember who plays that guy in Red Spectacles, so it's possible it's the same actor. The people who appear on the cover of Oshii's novel are Kaito Kichijoji, Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, Katsuya Terada, Mako Hyodou, Toshio Suzuki, Kenji Kawai, and Shoji Kawamori, but I'm not sure if the same people are on the film poster. |

Do you have a link to the cover of the novel?

Here I am innocently re-reading, and greatly enjoying again, Brian Ruh's book on Oshii and out of the dark recesses of the web comes this announcement.
I'm so jazzed! |

Regarding Superlivemation, when Vitruvius wrote me about it, he speculated that it might be similar to the cutouts of Mini-Pato.
In Mini-Pato, cut-out puppets were made from drawings of chracters, and those cut-outs were moved on screen to produce the animation. In this movie they may be making the cut-outs out of real photographs. Taking many photographs of a person in various poses, and then using those cut-outs as puppets in an "animated" movie. Seems interesting, but if it is this we won't refer to it as anime. Not to say that "it isn't worthy" of being anime, just to say that its completely different. -t |

(I'm not trying to be difficult. The definition of "anime" is something I think about a lot. I'm just wondering what your take is on this, Tempest.) |

Nod, defining anime and manga is something that I spend a lot of time thinking about as well. For ANN, our definition of "anime" is "Japanese Animation," no mention of style whatsoever. Ignoring any technical definitions of the word "animation" I definitely think that some sort of drawing, be it digital or by, hand, is required before I call something "animation," "cartoon," or "anime." Personally, I don't consider stop-motion productions (Puppet productions like Fuccons or Team America and claymation) to be animation (although it is called stop-motion animation). If my understanding of Superlivemation is correct, it's more akin to stop-motion than traditional animation. -t Last edited by Tempest on Tue Nov 22, 2005 8:44 pm; edited 1 time in total |

To some extent, 2d animation has almost reached its limit in terms of production quality. Its always nice to see someone pushing the limit and trying something new.
