The things I appreciate most about J. Beckett as a reviewer, which are very evident in this review, are his fairness and writing flair, along with his keen and in-depth knowledge of the mechanics of story and animation (without intellectual haughtiness). I dropped O;N as a "hot mess" of a story midway, and while it wraps up in the end with what I think are very contrived means, it is forced into making sense. Some people liked O;N and this will be for them.

I still think ChäoS;HEAd deserves that title more.

When Aniplex's new Occultic;Nine Blu-Ray landed in my lap for review, I was eager to catch up with another work from author Chiyomaru Shikura, even if the series itself isn't technically a part of the Science Adventure franchise.

When I read the description without noticing the title, I thought the review would be about Chaos;Child. But, alas, both Occultic;Nine and AoA exist just to keep things both inscrutable and unobtainable. So DVD;Rental because Show;Passable? I don't know because Possibility;Unlikely.

And this is from someone who likes Chaos;Head more than Steins;Gate. Wait, there goes my credibility... Hey, listen...

Is it really possible spoiler[to send an email to a pager that will change the sex of a child] or not? Never mind the time travel stuff, is that even sensible? And was the guy who came up with it as a plot point... of all things... the one who termed the phrase "Science Adventure"? I mean Science;Adventure?

When i watched the first episode of Occultic;Nine with my watchgroup, it gave me an enormous headache. There was no pause for anything; a constant barrage of incredibly fast dialogue, exposition, random events with no apparent connection or relation, and an art style i found garish. It was all just too much for me.

O;9 was one of 2016's best anime. The fast pace, eccentric characters, fantastic production values and the grim color palette made for such an amazing show. If aniplex wasn't the one releasing it I would buy it. Sadly as a Canadian that's just a no go.

Can't wait for Mononoke to come in the mail tomorrow. 17 bucks a pop for the Ghibli movies is awesome.

I didn't have problems following Occultic;Nine, nor understood how people did. Maybe it's just the lightning-fast pace, because it's cramming the content of a far larger thing (which is why it's also getting a VN with an extended and more fleshed out version of the plot) into a 1-cours anime. It's not like it's a Gundam: G in Reconguista kind of deal; every line of dialogue has at least some level of importance to the story or characters, and everything needed to get what's going on is already there. Home video and streaming even gives us the option to play parts back.

I'm with GoldCrusader above in that it's a pretty good mystery show for those who can really listen in, and that this would also be on my buy list (mainly because of the dub), but Aniplex's exorbitant prices sadly prevent that.

That's been on my to-do list for a while; acquiring the remaining Studio Ghibli films that are of interest to me. The only one I own is Princess Mononoke, but the ones I have seen are Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (technically not Studio Ghibli, but I guess it counts), Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away and The Wind Rises (the only one I've seen in theaters).

P.S.: Yeah, this is my minuscule-as-all-hell anime collection if any of you peeps are wondering. Wink

I really loved O;N (though the ending was kind of eh). I thought it was really fun and I didn't have troubles following it.
The animation was absolutely beautiful; the character movements were a delight to watch. At first I didn't like Ryotasu because of her massive boobs, but she was so much fun to watch as she danced around and stuff that I couldn't help enjoying her. The way she copies people's poses was so funny. There was so much happening with the character acting, I'd consider watching it again in dub just so I can focus on the animation.

My favorite character was Moritsuka, the detective. I loved him so much, he was so fun and so cute. I like that he acted like a dopey, annoying brat but actually was really smart.

I've been reading the novel and it's good too. It's making me nostalgic for the anime.
Especially whenever it has Moritsuka in it.
Domo, Zenigata desu.

I wish I knew more about the annoying semi-colon series so I could've picked up on any in-series references beyond el psy congree.

Hey, everyone starts somewhere. I still remember when my entire collection consisted of season 2 of Big O and a few single volumes of GITS: Stand-Alone Complex. And now it's...kind of ridiculous. Very Happy

I thought Occultic;Nine's start was its best - it just had so much style, man. Unfortunately it ends up not paying up with a convoluted end that I didn't care too much about, but it never really loses its visual excellence, but since it doesn't really ramp it up either, you just sort of start taking it for granted. I also liked both the OP and ED, visually and musically.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the OP and ED.
Both were good visually but man do I love the ED song. So catchy. And they way they did the next episode preview as part of the ED visuals was really cool.

You're right, everyone starts somewhere. As Optimus Prime once said "All we need is a little Energon and a lot of luck.", hence why I was lucky enough to obtain some of 'em for dirt cheap, including InuYasha and GaoGaiGar. Hopefully I'll redeem enough Amazon gift cards so that I can get the rest of 'em. Smile
