Restoration work that ADV did? Isn't the Platinum Edition just GAINAX's Renewal with a different name?

Nope, I believe Kyle has it right. If memory serves, the Platinum DVDs were restored by ADV, which is why they did things like re-recording some of the dub for the Platinum release

The next episode is also completly unedited if you listened to Kim Manning in her GATV interview.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, I believe, was remastered and restored in Japan before ADV recieved the new masters and started work on the Platinum Edition.

That's why you have a 5.1 Japanese audio track. Whether ADV did additional restoration, I do not know.

The bigger feature was the fact that they also redubbed a lot of the voices and cleaned up both the clarity of the image and that nasty little twitching frame that occured more times than I care to count. Rolling Eyes

The redub was only for the directors cut episodes.

Yeah, the remastering was 100% GAINAX (except for the dub parts, obviously). Here's a quick breakdown of the remastered release schedule:

3/26/03 - Evangelion Test-Type, sample of episode one fully remastered.

6/25/03 - Evangelion DVD Box, complete series fully remastered, including the movies. All extra Evangelion material also included.

7/24/03 to 11/27/03 - TV series Vol. 1-8 plus movies released in single disks, fully remastered (also included original 2.0 tracks).

7/27/04 to 4/19/05 - ADV "Platinum" released, region 1 version of JP disks. They fixed their dub to match the new Japanese 5.1 track, but also removed the original 2.0 tracks from the disks. Crying or Very sad

11/3/04 - The movies released in a true DTS Collector's Edition in Japan (further remastering of the audio).

(Volumes 6 and 7 of the "Platinum" release contain a third dub version of episodes 21-24. There's regular, director's cut, and the corrected 5.1 version which is the one included on these disks).

I will believe it when I see it. While [AS] is not Toonami, there is still quite a bit of fan-service ("and what service" spoiler[*cough* digital bikini *cough*]) in "THE BEAST". I'd be most impressed if [AS] does hardly any edits of NGE. It'd make me feel a lot more confident about 2nd GIG airing unscathed.

The redub was only for the directors cut episodes.

I believe there were some added lines or line changes in some of the regular Renewal episodes as well.

"Brain Damage" was changed to " Mental Contamanation" and the episode privews were redone.

That's correct. And if you want to really nitpick, ADV's release is actually a tiny step backwards by being interlaced instead of progressive like the Japanese release. Though that doesn't matter to most people.

Regarding the episode itself, did it seem fast to anyone? As if it were either time-compressed like a lot of rerun TV shows and movies on cable channels these days, or as if tiny bits were removed from the beginnings and ends of different cuts and scenes? I wonder if Kyle might be able to just check runtimes for the episode on the DVD release (any of them) and the episode as it aired (whether he taped it with ye olde VCR or TiVO'ed it or whatever). Not trying to raise a big stink or anything, but I'm just trying to figure out if I'm crazy or not.

It's true that Renewal has new lines (in the original japanese dub). They are announces and background voices. No new main character dialogue.

But yes, the "wonderful restoration" wasn't done by ADV but by Gainax. Anno himself (or was it Yamaga?), stated that doing Renewal took more time than doing the original series, so go figure.

They might as well have reanimated then Razz.

There are several classic series that I want reanimated, not restored, or redone...just reanimated Razz.

I would be very surprised if Eva didn't come through almost completely untouched. AS has come a long way, and they've been pushing their boundaries. I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Episode 18 and 19 might prove a bit too much for them to handle, even with them pushing their boundaries.
