Is there any point to this, considering the first chapter featured Naruto flipping the bird? Anyways, it should be amusing to watch the angry fanboys call Viz the antichrist for the next few months.

So do they just blur it out, or remove the whole page?
It's one of those minor edits that are somewhat annoying, but it doesn't take much away from anything.

All they do is redraw the hand so that Naruto is clenching his fist. I'd scan it, but my printer/scanner is being wonky.

I didn't even notice there being anything different, but now the "STAB" sound effect underneath it seems a bit out of place. Who stabs with their fist? Confused

I don't really care about these minor edits. I think the humor in the panel would've been funnier if they had kept the middle finger, but it really doesn't matter.

This is pretty old news, it was made apparent in the issue of Shonen Jump this chapter ran that his flipping the bird was edited.

If you wanna learn more about some edits in Shonen Jump and other manga out there, check over here - http://j-revolution.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6712

I don't like the editing of manga, but I guess I can tolerate a little bit for Naruto. As long as they aren't editing the violence and blood.

However, my precious Bleach, YYH, and RK better remain uncut.

All three have survived Uncut. Otherwise, several gorey deaths in Rurouni Kenshin should've been severely edited out by now.

Most of the GN only releases are more lucky, unless they are in the "Shonen Jump Advanced" line.

What's the point of editting manga, seriously its just plain annoying. Don't you all think so too? Everyone just gets mad they should leave the manga it was supposed to be read.

This happens every time Viz preps an anime for a kiddie block.

One more edit, and I'm dropping the title.

Probably because those three aren't trying to be built up into a major anime franchise by Viz. If Viz ends up with the liscence to Bleach (quite likely) I bet you'll see a few edits in that manga, too. --;;;

It's so they get on bookstore shelves. You'll see Shonen Jump on racks of most big chain grocery stores and even Wal-Mart's now. It's also because, Shonen Jump has quickly become one of the biggest names in manga in the USA faster than Tokyopop did when they first introduced the "100% Authentic Manga" line a few years ago.

Shonen Jump has pretty much hit the mainstream, and being a manga anthology aimed at young teens, its gotta sell at its target demographic. But with problems like being dropped out of scholastic's catalog, banned from school libaries, and even parents giving back negative feedback about the content of the manga, it causes nothing but problems.

There's alot of reasons why its done. I don't exactly condemn it, but it is bothersome being a fan of something and finding out something is edited and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, even if its a very minor edit. But likewise, this is something us fans have had to live with FOR years, we'll just have to get used it, but you can buy the original japanese versions and be patient for that day when editing is no longer needed, which depends heavily on the growth of not just the industry, but the fans as well.

However, Viz is releasing uncut Naruto dvds in 2006. Any edits done in the Shonen Jump magazines are usually kept in the graphic novel releases. While there there never were any problems with things like fingers, penises and such in the mag before, alot of that has changed because of compliants from parents and change of staff.

Shonen Jump cannot use alot of mild language, show genitals, underage tobacco/alchol use, gun violence, and abusive body language and a few other things. They can get away with more of this stuff in the GN-only releases sometimes though.

It's really complex and confusing, but thats just how it is. There isnt a single manga publisher out there that isnt at least a bit guilty for some form of editing one way or another.

Viz has Inuysha and its a MAJOR anime franchise, but the manga is not edited (not counting the left to right reading format). Although they got Zatch Bell...but the only edits in it are Zatch wearing underwear when he's naked (We cant have no child pr0n! Oh noez!).

I am starting to think that Geneon will go out and License Bleach.

I'll bet anything Funi will grab it. If they don't, then 4Kids. Laughing

I've heard a rumor that Funimation intends to or has put a bid on it, but most likely it'll go to Viz. No idea about other companies, and please note, this is just a RUMOR and speculation.

In the grand scheme of things this isn't nearly as bad as when they started mistranslating Zoro's name in One Piece. That's what convinced me to drop Shonen Jump (which I had been subscribed to since the begining). If I can't trust them, I won't pay them.
