I don't know about the music industry or the mainstream TV/movie industry, but I've never heard of an anime company trying to crack down on AMV's. If they had an issue about it, then why allow so many conventions to hold AMV competitions? Even Industry-run conventions hold AMV contests. Personally, I think it's a very valuable (and free) way of marketing. I can't tell you how many times I've watched an AMV of an anime, or a singer/band, and said "Hey, that looks/sounds good!", and went out and bought the DVD's for the show or the music CD. And some of these I wouldn't have bothered with otherwise had I not seen the "samples" in the AMV's.

But thats just my opinion.

Damnit....why did that guy have to THINK?! Oh well..... looks like if others start to think, AMV's will be illegal?

According to article, the guy was saying that AMVs technically are copyright violations but they SHOULDN'T be. He's saying that AMVs (among other things) SHOULD be legal.

Like Kiyoko, AMVs have led me to get anime DVDs and music CDs. I discovered my favorite band (Nightwish) through AMVs.

Same thing here as a matter of fact - first time I heard a particular song by Nightwish (10th Man Down) in a FMA AMV I went out and chased down a CD. Now I have just about every major CD that they put out.

there have been a small handfull of editors who have been contacted to stop distributing one or some of their videos. as far as i know, this was a long time ago and it was futile as by the time they stopped the videos were already out of thier hands in the first place. now adays most anime lisences holders have been very excited and supportive of amvs. Animego has supplied prizes for a-m-v.org's VCA awards. free advertising. i don't think there have been any music lisence holders contacting editors though. i've been contacted by a band under a sony label to do an amv for them using one of their songs though.

That's the same song that made me a fan. I heard it in an AMV for Gundam 08th MS Team (one of my favorite AMVs).

I love that AMV.

I have to admit, since I rarely listen to music radio anymore (because it's the same horrible songs over and over again), my little awareness of modern music comes from music I've heard in AMVs.

Isn't this kinda like the situation in Japan with Doujinshi? IIRC, they are illegal, but the companies don't do anything about them because it promotes their stuff.

It just depends on the type of people you're dealing with. For instance, I don't think you're allowed to use clips/audio from any of the Star Wars movies when you're making fan-films.

True, true. If I hadn't seen the famous "Engel" maybe I wouldn't spend my $100 on Evangelion collection. Which was the first anime I bought.

I signed up for the first time because of this article. Anyway some of you may know me from AMV.org and may have heard my thoughts on the whole subject. I'll just quote my profile! ;P

I feel AMVs promote anime sales, and music sales as well. There has been many music CDs and Anime I've bought because of AMVs. If you like AMVs, please support them anyway you can, cause it's not just a hobby, but a way of life or something... lol Razz

That is the exact video that made me a huge Nightwish fan. After seeing that video I now have everyone of their CDs.

The downside being that if this guy fails in his argument, other types of pirates can attempt the "well, you let THEM do it," which could have bad results in long run. That said, I hope he convinces some people Anime smallmouth
