At first, I thought the heading meant that Fruits Basket had reached the eleventh spot...
I'm hoping for more manga to reach the top 150 list as we go along. My local Barnes and Noble frequently doubled their manga section within the past year. All of the Harry Potter books reach the list, what a surprise. |

I'm happy for the success of Fruits Basket, although right now I'm just borrowing the series from the library (too many other manga to buy right now). Supposedly I'm #74 in the hold line to borrow Fruits Basket #10.

I would buy them too, but the manga in the U.S. cost too much. Back in mhy hometown, each volume of manga costs like $2.00 USD (but they recently raised the price to $2.50 USD).
And if you have a membership for a bookstore, you may rent three volumes of manga for meerly $1.00 USD. I understand the delicacy the companies had to put into translation, but tripling the price to $7.50 USD per volume (sometimes $10.00 USD) seem a little too much for my taste. For that kind of price, I could have rented the whold series of Rurouni Kenshin in my hometown. Reading manga is about hobby and leisure, why should it cost so much? |

hmmmm... did I miss something here? Tokyopop's release date for FB 11 is 8/9/05 according to the site, yet its already on the top 150 booksales with what looks like an early release date reported somewhere else? If the TP website is wrong, then where am I suppose to look for TP release dates? It sorta erks me because I own a shop and ordered a ton of these just to find out that all the major competition (B&N, Suncoast, BB) already had it for 2 weeks now...

Yeah, my local Barnes and Noble has nearly tripled what they had a year ago. It used to be only one section of the graphic novel section, but now it has expanded so much it had to be moved to a larger section of the store, and there's barely any American graphic novels, there's so much manga on the shelves. (The one problem is that they don't seem to realize that they need to frequently carry all the consecutive volumes of a manga, not just volumes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 10.  )

Ha! At least you HAVE manga at your local library. All we have here is a huge collection of Doremon in Chinese that no one ever really borrows (except those Chinese kids that can read Chinese really well-which doesn't include me). Apparently, our library is starting to "pick up" graphic novels because they're popular now, but the only manga on there list is Inuyasha v.1, and I havn't even seen it around in the library, even though I work there -_-. |

Because of economics. Manga is a mass-market commodity in Japan -- and most of East Asia for that matter -- and can be sold cheaply because of economies of scale. (If you make enough of something, it gets cheaper to make.) It's a fringe market in the US, plus printing costs are higher in the US, so the books are expensive there. |
