Must be a slow news day at CNN if they're wasting time covering anything involving reverse harem dating sims. Laughing

Reminds me of when I read a FOX News article reviewing Trigger Happy Havoc.

I dated five Japanese women...they're undateable. They are cynical right into your face and they freak out once you tell them what you feel for them. The country and the culture itself embedded that for them. Dating sims and the "Idol culture" has dragged Japan into the worst social spectrum in the recent years. I've been telling this for years and everybody tell me that "it's not like that there" when it actually is. Japanese women are against sex for the way the culture and the media have been portraying it and that the way they're oppressed.
It's just easier to play a videogame of basic human needs so you can fulfill them over the screen than to go ahead and get the real thing. When in America a dating sim was ever successful? actually made in America with American programmers? Never...

Cause we go out and get the real thing.

Sorry to rain on this parade. But if this were true and using your logic, there would be no need for porn either. Yet it is one of the biggest industries around. Dating sims aren't necessarily just about getting your jollies on.

I would hazard the reason is moreso that Japanese dating sims are often very strongly tied to their cultural norms. Which as you suggest are possibly very different from our own. And so far the English language devs actually making dating sims (there are plenty out there) have invariably just been copying JP ones.

One of the most recent ones to actually break this is Ladykiller in a Bind (which is still pretty JP tropey, but is mostly doing its own thing) from Christine Love. And that I believe has been fairly successful.

The reason everyone is not in a relationship is because the japanese government doesn't want to overpopulate in their country due to its small area so the government payed companies in the movie music anime and video game to make characters I'm their genres for people to love upon instead of seeing into a relationship.

Fwiw that survey on Japanese singles comes up a lot & is always misrepresented. It's 38% of the 38% of respondents who were 'eligible' that weren't interested in romantic relationships, or 14% of the total respondents . Likewise, 17% of the total were still virgins. Not low numbers by any means, but much smaller than the headline figures make it out to be.

This article's over a week old.

This is some scary stuff, given the birth rate debate. Kind of funny, since we've been blaming otakus this entire time. Seriously, 44.2% of millennial women are virgins? WTF

A few possible culprits:

Social Anxiety/Depression: When you believe no one likes you, even platonically, it makes you less likely to attempt to make friends, let alone date.

Societal Acceptance of Asexuality and/or Being Single: Less people who never wanted to be in a relationship are feeling like it's mandatory.

Also laziness, unrealistic standards set by fiction, income barely enough to support one person, let alone a family, etc.

Mass Effect.

Tali is everyone's waifu. Except for Bioware who REALLY want you to be with Liara.

Most recently-produced Western dating sims have been Ren'Py engine games put out by smaller publishers. Analogue: A Hate Story is a good title if you're into manhwa (although it can get very disturbing - think The Handmaiden's Tale and you'll have a good sense of the game's atmosphere), while Black Closet was a very well-received student council management/lesbian dating sim.

There really isn't a super-popular, "AAA" game that primarily centers around dating, although as Beatdigga mentions, some Bioware RPGs offer a degree of control over your party member's love lives.

I wonder if Japan's overtly strict societal standards may be the reason why so many people there are single and have no interest in dating...
