You just can't have Naru being voiced by a grown woman, it doesn't work, at least not for me.

It does for me because the age doesn't matter but the voice and voice acting do. I have to be honest, I expected the worst and should have hoped for the best because it's looking a lot like Christmas in August. I want to watch Barakamon all OVER to tide me OVER until the dub comes out. I only hope this gives us more of a chance to show them we want a sequel, not just a prequel.

Robert McCollum is not who I'd expect being cast for this and yet it seems so perfect. I'm curious if he would reprise the role for Handa-kun.

Of course the voice is what matters, it's just that an adult would not generally have the voice of a child. And I think Naru works best being voiced by an actual child.

Yeah, the value of child (voice) actors is greatly underappreciated. Even in Japanese dubs it's pretty rare to have an actual child voice a child. But for me that's very important, and that's why Usagi Drop and Barakamon worked so well, and that's also why I'm looking forward so much to Sweetness & Lightning. Other examples include the Ghibli movies, Giovanni's Island and Mushishi.

There really is a huge difference. An adult can try to imitate a child's voice, but it will never be the same.

As much as I love to hear child characters being voiced by child seiyuu, quite a few challenges (child labor laws, time constraints, etc.) make it hard to attempt. If the adult actress can make her voice sound like that of a 10-year-old when voicing a female child character, that's good enough in my eyes.

And I know Naru works best being voiced by someone who was a child and who still embraces their inner child unlike most of the adults in our reality.

You can always just watch the first two episodes of the dub for free and see for yourself how it turned out. The original is cute, but the dub voice works perfectly fine for such a tom boy character.

Adults in both sub and dub imitate childs voice in about every anime so by that logic its "not the same".

I just finished the first two episodes and imo its very good. Alison Viktorin is adorable as Naru and Rob McCollum isn't a bad Handa. I'll definitely pick up the set when it comes out. I mean I was gonna do that anyway since it was one of my favorite anime that came out in 2014, but the dub certainly sweetens the deal.

In terms of dubs, there is actually a good reason why kids are not hired for kid roles. And it's simple also. The thing is, adults have a far better perception of lip-reading, and for dubs, you have to make sure that everything you say lines up with the character's mouth movements. Japan doesn't have this problem however, as voice acting is always done before the actual animation, so for them I guess it's just a lack of talent. In fact, the reason why then-twelve-year-old Aaron Dismuke got to voice Alphonse Elric after Justin Cook brought him in was because Al doesn't have any lip motions, so Aaron had the complete ability to mix and match his voice.

Alison did fine as Ame in Wolf Children and she sounds fine as Naru.

I just watched the first two episodes dubbed and thought it was great even without a child voicing Naru it still turned out great. Cool
