I'm so sure they make better rap than the country that invented it.
I can't wait for the East Coast tour, but I'm afraid I'll be there with a bunch of children. Damn Cartoon Network... |

Don't forget, you have to get fans while they're young. I first got exposed to Jpop off of Gundam Wing with some of the songs by Two-Mix.

From a shear creative aspect, mainstream-American rap has degenerated into absolute garbage. So I'd certainley believe some country somewhere is doing more interesting things with it as a style than America currently is. I don't listen to Japanese rap so I can't say if its them or not. |

Blargh....Why do they get to have a performance on TV, much more a performance on a massive network such as ABC?
They're not a bad band, I just don't think they should be getting all this publicity just for doing the opening theme to an american Anime. Heck, the Pillows did the Music for FLCL, (Which IMO, is a lot better than Teen Titans) And I don't see them with their own TV show or a TV performance. Adding to this fact, I know a lot more people that would rather listen to the Pillows rather than Puffy Ami Yumi. .....Are you catching my drift? I just think that CN has greatly exagerated their popularity...They're NOT Japan's "Biggest Pop-stars" like they seem to think, and I think that's the main thing that's confused many people.... |

Agreed, excluding the Beastie Boys, American rap is decomposing. And I mean that in literal sense. I'm not much for Japanese rap though, I enjoy Korean rap more, it works well with their language. Two of Korea's biggest rappers are playing in LA this April at the Hollywood Bowl, I hope I can go! :D I'm not entirely happy with how their bringing Japanese music here, because they're only bringing music, for the most part, that's associated with anime. Think of all those poor other...better...artists. :) edit: Hmm, just looking at the article a bit longer, they're playing in my city...not really worth seeing though. Darkness, lol, I completly agree with you. CN's marketing has got to be the dumbest thing ever. "Hey! Let's make a show based off of the popularity of a foreign band that can't even sell out Gackt!" |

Actually, at one time, Puffy WERE able to outsell Gackt, and Gackt is still big now, although not as big as Puffy were in their heyday. So it's unfair to compare those two at the moment. Also, you have to realize Puffy has been around for about 10 years now, and they're just lucky to still be around in the very fickle jmusic business at all. So yes, their popularity has dropped drastically since 97 or so, but that's to be expected. I don't think you'll still be seeing gackt around in 5-10 years or so.

True, but the thing is, the CN show wasn't even in production until after their drastic fall from popularity, which still leads back to the fact that CN marketing is quite strange. If you count his time w/ Malice Mizer, Gackt's been around for quite some time too, but I'm not sure how long. 10 years really isn't that long in the music business. After all, how long have the Bz's been around? Luna Sea members and now all of their new projects? Or on this side of the world, U2, the Beastie Boys, Guns and Roses/Velvet Revolver, and sadly enough, Cher? |
