If you're anything like me, you probably have at least a few Geneon single releases scattered among your collection. And if you do, odds are that you have at least one of those cases with the super-annoying DVD spindle in them. Y'know, the ones with the plastic ring you have to mash your thumb into to the point where it almost draws blood, and which holds on with so much force that it feels like the disk is going to snap before the connection does. They're just brutal. Unfortunately, I think I finally had a disk fall prey to their iron-fisted grip. I've finally gotten around to watching Captain Herlock: Endless Odyssey, which I picked up during one of those RightStuf 25-for-$100 blow-outs. I didn't notice it when putting it in, but when I removed the second volume from my DVD player, I noticed a very small crack running outwards from the spindle hole. And of course it had to be this particular volume: while the other three singles can still be found on RightStuf et al. for all of $4, volume 2 must have been the lower-quantity one, since the cheapest I've seen it is for $18.
The good news is that the crack is small enough and situated in such a way that I don't think it'll spread outward to anywhere near the actual disk surface. Plus, I already watched that volume, so I'm not exactly going to be fiddling with it every week. I can't say I feel like dropping $20 on a replacement for a disk that still works just fine, so unless I find a cheaper copy somewhere like FYE's Geneon singles graveyard, I think I'll just burn a back-up copy, in case it ever does go kaput. So does anyone else have any horror stores involving these cases, besides the usual bruised thumbs? |

Not a horror story and it's not a Genon case but I have the Moribito stack pack (8 discs, one spindle) and my anime club is terrified to touch it lest they break it so I had to pop the discs in and out when we watched it. Still need to grab jewel cases for that....

Heh, I have that one too, but it didn't seem too bad to handle when I opened it up. I'll probably be double-dipping with the Blu-rays at some point anyway.

Specific stores do sell DVD cases that hold more than one DVD...

I upgraded the Stackpak set to the Blu-rays just to avoid that.
