Man, I would LOVE to be able to see this in a theatre. It was quite influential to me growing up, and was part of my introduction to anime and manga (at least, the manga was).
Too bad it'll never come up to Canada (specifically Winnipeg) ever. Would be really nice.

who: Well, the movie is sort of anime-related, since the hackers use Slam Dunk characters as avatars.

Well, I am happy that the first run of Battle Royale in a US theater (that I know) will be the original movie and not whatever 3D travesty they added in.

love to see a wide release of the film but it'd never fly here in the states for the obvious reasons (kids killing kids for those not in the know)

Megiddo: Actually, we were supposed to get the 3D release, but it didn't happen. Maybe the fad's dying out so quickly that Anchor Bay doesn't feel confident banking on even a limited run? Me, I just want to see the sequel, without having to mod a player, so I can be done with it already. I know it allegedly sucks, but I need to have that sense of completion.
hito: Well, the PG-13 version[Hunger Games] is making people so bored that they might actually want a movie like BR.
penguin: Pretty much, but Toupee refused to license it until recently. So it might actually be new to a lot of people who have just gotten into JP pop culture.

Let's not even go there. The concept of Hunger Games (i.e. teens being forced by the government to hunt each other down in a survivor-for-real game) is generally similar to BR's, but that's the only significant similarity. It's entirely different in backstory, character development, plot, and execution. Besides, the few comments I've heard about the initial trailers for it (HG) have been very positive.
