I was at Fry's electronics today and I was killing time and looking through the anime section and I noticed something. There was one section that had a red sign next to it.

Said something that Geneon Entertainment has gone out of business get these titles for 14.99 and up while they last. Once their gone they are gone.

Now I don't keep up with anime like I used to. It just struck me as odd. I've not been able to find anything that supports this. So I thought I would ask here.

Did they go out? Will the anime that they were working with be dropped and not be released? One I'm curious about is Hellsing.

Thanks

Geneon offically closed up at the end of last year. Their catalog has been out-of-print, with unfinished titles on perma-hold.

At least, until this year's Anime Expo- Funimation announced that they've re-liscensed many of the on-hiatus anime, and will be releasing them starting a lil' later this month (I think some are out already.) Hellsing Ultimate is one of the titles they rescued, but not the original series.

There were news articles on all this stuff when it happened... check the ANN archives.

The following titles were resurrected:

Black Lagoon
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage
Elemental Gelade
Ergo Proxy
Fate/Stay Night
Hellsing Ultimate
Kamichu
Kyo Kara Maoh Season 2
Lyrical Nanoha
Paradise Kiss
Rozen Maiden
Rozen Maiden Traumend
Shakugan no Shana
Shonen Onmyouji
The Familiar of Zero
The Law of Ueki
The Story of Saiunkoku
When They Cry

The rest of Geneon's massive catalog (which includes many of my favorite titles) is still 6 feet under which is a shame. Sure I own what I wanted from them already aside from the incompletes I was left with but great titles like Haibane Renmei, Lunar Legend Tsukihime, and others are now out of print and will no longer be available for new fans to check out. I hope that Funi or others might pick up some of the titles that are done but in limbo, like Tsukihime and Haibane Renmei as mentioned. Your best bet to find them would probably be eBay from someone selling their copy or renting through a site like Netflix. I would imagine they'll still have their copies. Providing no one destroys, ruins, or steals them and thus ruin it for everyone else. Confused

Well that sucks. Any reason as to why? I guess my netflix will come in more handy now. Thanks for the info too. Hellsing Ultimate was the one I was concerned about.

Does this mean i will not be able to get hold of the habaine boxset anymore. If I'm lucky they might still have it in HMV if i get in there quickly.

What it means is what's out there now is all they'll ever be- a lot of the older shows aren't in high demand, so they aren't too pricey yet (if you skip the box, for example, Haibane Renmei can stil lbe had secondhand on Amazon for $30 or so.)

Bascially, if it's Geneon, and you want it, pick it up ASAP- just in case.

New one is $36: DVD1, DVD2, DVD3 and DVD4. And you can add CD to the mix for $6.

Not a bad idea. A lot of stuff from Geneon is still "in stock" at RightStuf (and often for cheap!) - from "Ah My Goddess!" to "Zipang", but some of the titles are gone extinct... Things like Cardcaptor Sakura (only movies remain), Sailor Moon (nothing remains - everything is "sold out") or Battle Athletes (only TV is there, not OVA)...

Actually it's not much different from "normal" companies: TokyoPop is alive and well but try to buy Vampire Princess Miyu (TV) or Psychic Academy DVDs... Not that I'm big fan of Psychic Academy, but the fact remains: today it's often easier to find from Geneon then from TokyoPop...

Geneon's license to those two series expired in January 2007 and April 2005 respectively, so their unavailability has nothing to do with Geneon's September 2007 shutdown.

If you're looking for definitive information on Geneon's situation, it starts here:

Too bad Zipang isn't cheap, however, otherwise I'd have bought it. $23 dollars times 7 DVDs is still far to expensive, even for a moderately good show.

Leave these ruminations to historians. What matter to end-user is availability of stuff, not the availability of the license. While expiration of license can be one of the reasons for the show unavailability there are many-many others. And few shows are making comeback with different sellers - only the most popular ones.

This is discussing fate of the Geneon company, not the fate of the Geneon shows - and most will be interested in Geneon's shows, not the Geneon itself. Your links say that DVD distribution will be stopped altogether (and that for true for a time), but at least some shows will be distributed by Funimation now, so not everything will be lost.

I'd much prefer to have the list of "in print" shows, not the list "licensed shows". Does it matter much to me if Nadia is licensed or not right now? I want to know if it's easy to buy or I should watch deals on Amazon z-shop and eBay!

Geneon didn't actually 'close up shop', so to speak. They stopped sales and distribution. And Funimation did not "rescue" any licenses. They rescued Geneon by making a deal to take over the distribution of their titles. They don't own the licenses to any of them. Geneon still does. It's all in the news articles in the archives. If you want to help people, make sure you give them good info.

They're the same thing in this case. Funimation only has those select shows which means they don't have the others, unless they liscense them in the future, and no other titles will be "in print" again besides those unless they liscene them. Geneon has no faculties on it's own to produce any products on DVD, therefore the list that I posted earlier is all that is or will be in print for the time being barring any future announcements.

Some of the titles Funimation got like Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy, and Fate/Stay Night were released fully on DVD by Geneon while some were halted and left incomplete like When They Cry, yet still other were never released at all if that's what you're referring to. In which case I could only tell you about the ones I was interested in.

Those are not the same thing. Geneon still holds every single one of its licenses that has not expired. Funimation has agreed to distribute titles it feels will turn a profit. The "in print" shows are the ones in your list. The "licensed shows" are everything else that Geneon was distributing before they had their plug pulled by their Japanese parent company. Big difference, and a valid request. Though, technically your list fulfilled the request.
