Kyudo in english literally means the Way of the Bow. I find Japanese Archery to be very interesting but I have not seen a lot of animes with this though...Anyway I was wondering:
1.Does having Kyudo in an anime make it more interesting or not? 2. Besides the Inuyasha anime and manga whats another anime and/or manga that has Kyudo in it? If you're curious about Kyudo then I recommend this site to you guys: http://www.kyudo.com/ |

I'm intrested in it, I don't know if it being in anime makes it intresting to other people...
Cardcaptor Sakura had it. Yuki and one other girl competed against each other. And it's not anime, but the manga Alice 19th has it quite a bit because one of the people are in the school club. |

Arjuna has Kyudo and it's an integral part of the theme.
Gasaraki too but not a lot I think. I remember seeing it in the CL theme. Other than the above, I can't recall. Poor memory.... |

Magic Knights Rayearth is another one... though limited in parts.
![]() I think I heard a very, very brief mention of it in Hime-chan's Ribbon, (I think one of Hime-chan's friends was in that club) but it was never shown. |

I just remembered, the "other girl" is a teacher at Sakura's elementray school. She the one with the mysterious cresent shaped bell, and also happens to be the daughter of the local temple keeper and once tuitioned Sakura's elder brother when he was in high school. There was supposed to be some romance between them but it seemed she went overseas. |

How is Japanese Archery different from Western/European style?

Way bigger bows, and the Japanese are more traditional in practising it. People doing Kyudo tradionally wear special, authentic robes, much like what they do for kendo. |

It's more than just a sport. It's a cultural thing, like Kendo and Sumo.
And notice how the Kyudo bow is longer at the top but shorter at the bottom? In the old days, the samurai would ride their horses into battle and fire their bows at the same time. The shorter bottom wasso the horses' legs would not get tangled up and they all fall over in a heap. |

I'm kinda surprised that no one has mentioned Princess Mononoke.

Actually, Cardcaptors comments reminded me of a couple things. First, in modern times Kyudo is often practiced at bigger Shinto Shrines (A friend of mine watched a competition at Meiji Jinga). It also tends to be a "women's sport" From what I remember, that teacher in Cardcaptors was also a Shrine Maiden.
If Inu Yasha is any indication, Priestesses were also good shots in the feudal Japan. I seem to recall the bow was one of the weapons favored by Samurai Women along with the Naginata. These two facts probably indirectly led to the inclusion of Kyudo in Arjuna and the Arrow shot in the closeing of Gasaraki (both shows with big supernatural elements). As for Mononoke, Ashitaka's Archery was Ainu style so in some ways not part of Kyudo tradition. But still, it was very cool. All the Best, Nani? |

How could you forget Inu-yasha? The bow is used many times in the series by both Kikyo and Kagome.

Bigger bows?
I don't know hardly anything about Japanese archery, but I draw your attention to the English Yew Longbow. 6 ft. long 110 lb. draw Effective Range: 250 yards Rate of Fire: 12 arrows per minute. Go ask the French Army at the Battle of Agincourt! |
