Daniela [who works for Tokyopop, and was a guest on ANNCast awhile ago] posted this excellent article as a response to a rude remark on her http://allaboutcomics.wordpress.com/2010/03/05/ten-ways-to-not-steal-manga/ article. Really fascinating look into why people devote their time to bringing manga to us, and the rewards and problems it brings about. She also exposes some of the economics that go into manga pricing. Fascinating stuff.
