It's Batman Fever! I've heard that over 90% of the tickets for the Dark Knight's opening weekend are already pre-sold. I may just wait until the following weekend to go see it.

I hope that some of Gotham Knight's publicity is given to the anime studios- it'd probably do some good to the industry.
From flicking through the papers I'm not sure where the Batman fever ends and the belated Heath mourning begins. |

Unfortunately, it seems as though the fact that Gotham Knight was animated by Japanese studios is being kept under wraps like a dirty secret. Short of a few short mentions on the commentary track, there are no supplemental features on the disc that so much as acknowledge the fact that Japanese studios had anything whatsoever to do with the creation of the shorts, and the word "anime" is for all intents and purposes not used especially prominently in the advertising. In fact, many who picked up Gotham Knight didn't even know it had any sort of Japanese animator involvement until after they started watching it; they just figured it was the latest direct-to-video DC animated movie. Of all the negative feedback I encounter in the various Gotham Knight discussions on the Internet, the one I keep hearing the most tends to be a variation on "why did they have to make it like anime?" Granted, it's often phrased a lot harsher than that (often using a term that these forums will not permit me to write due to a word filter, which as Rob Fenelon noted in an interview is a big part of why anime fandom started to distance themselves from the term "Japanimation"), but it does perhaps illustrate WHY Warner/DC decided to do what they did. A LOT of people, especially the sorts whom one would expect to buy animated Batman stories (and by that I mean "they probably read the comicbooks too"), harbor a kneejerk-like disdain for anime and manga because of the influence it's having on US cartoons and comicbooks. As such, hyping up the "this is a US/Japan collaboration!" aspect of the production was probably seen as a move that would have negatively affected sales among this group, which probably comprises the majority of the people who would buy Batman: Gotham Knight in high definition sight unseen. Pretty much just in the interviews of the writers/producers/ADRs where they acknowledge the great job done by the Japanese studios.
At least they also don't read the mostly lukewarm anime website reviews; otherwise, Gotham Knight wouldn't have been #1. Obviously, the anime fandom influence is miniscule compared to the buying power of the general public.

Well as long as the sales help to get us a full Batman anime series I'll be damn happy! The last three shorts of Gotham Knight are awesome and definately show the potential for a great mature Batman anime! They should make 3 full OVA movies in those styles or a full length 26 episode series!
My dream would be to have a full length OVA movie done in the style of 'Deadshot' or 'In Darkness Dwells' whereas 'Working Through Pain's style would be perfect for a full length TV series! Anyway I got my day 1 tickets for Dark Knight ready! Can't wait! |

While I may have some fan nitpicks like why isn't that Montoya with Crhis or some other bits, this was still fantastic. I gladly added it along side my other animated Batman collection. Closest thing we'll get to a Gotham Central show too. Glad to hear it sold well.

Of course, they seem to forget that most of the production companies which worked on the 90 and 00s cartoons were anime studios, but it's the same kind of rivalry between Star Trek and Star Wars fans, I guess. |

It's because Ramirez is a character from the movie. Rucka wrote her as Montoya, but it was changed to fit with the movie continuity. |
