To anyone who is a member of the Sam Goody/Suncoast/Media Play/On Cue Replay Club: DO NOT buy Shonen Jump Issue 0 from Suncoast, if you haven't already.
A free copy is being included with the September/October issue of Request magazine, which should arrive in members' mailboxes any day now. I just got my copy today, and I straight-up freaked out. One Piece and Shaman King have finally set foot on American soil. Yay. |

I believe that issue is being given away at all comic book/manga retailers, assuming you get there fast enough to get a copy

Yeah, I snagged a copy of SJ #0 last week at a Suncoast. I was very impressed... I'll be subscribing, since it's only 20 bucks right now. The thing has One Piece and Naruto, two excellent titles. Can't ask for much more than that.

Thanks to it, I save approximately 10% per year on movie purchases, in the long run. It is, sadly, the best place to buy movies in town, if you don't want to buy stuff online. The other stores tend not to carry certain titles, and a number of them charge for special orders, while Suncoast doesn't.. the $5 off for $100 isn't great... but if you buy during their double point days (or is it triple?) you suddenly increase that to $10-$15 per $100... and if you happen to want Editor's Picks and stuff, you can usually raise that to $20 or $25 off per $100. Additionally, if you only buy 2-3 times a year, they'll give you extra points (to entice you to buy more often, hahaha.) Of course, they *ALWAYS* sell at MSRP.. but if all the other stores in town do, too, then it's not really that much of a loss.. |

When I do go there to buy anime (It not very often because I have to drive about 40 miles out of the way to get to it.) I usally buy around $100, then a couple weeks later I get $5 off my next purchase.

One thing's sure: you're lucky to be able to get anime and mangas in local stores... I can only buy per post order or on-line. :(
...or when I'm abroad... BTW Forbidden Planet in England rules!! (I bought there my GitS manga and anime and Akira anime, unfortunately I didn't have enough money to buy some other items.. :( ) I envy you guys! |

I too used to be reliant on Suncoast....until a Best Buy opened down the street. Best Buy is an Otaku's dream. They carry virtually every anime title available and they sell 'em for $20 a pop.

Best Buy is such a nice place *sigh* Well, for those of you who aren't fortunate to have BB in town, I recommend a store online called DigitalEyesDVDs.com. They have the same cheap prices as buy.com, but they don't have outrageous two-three month backorders. In fact, they ship most things immediately, or on the day a preorder is out. Really, buying anime from these retail stores are increasingly better than buying from anime stores, as many of them are quite expensive in comparison. |

Oh. My mistake then. I haven't been to Suncoast in over a month due to vacation and lack of cash resulting from said vacation, so I don't know about the matter from personal experience. This article led me to believe that it was being sold like any other issue would be. Given that issue zero is a promotional issue, though, I suppose it makes sense that they're giving it away. At any rate, some people will be getting a copy in the mail. That's the only really important thing I had to say.
Not per se, in my opinion. Issue 0 isn't all that spectacular, in the greater scheme of things. It's only 52 pages, the manga previews are between 4 and 9 pages long each, and there are only a half dozen short feature articles and advertisements on top of that. And if Cassandra is correct, getting it through the club isn't saving you any money, either. It's neat to see the kind of product they're going to produce, but Issue 0 isn't exactly a publishing miracle by its own merits. The Yu Yu Hakusho episode 1 CD-ROM that they included a couple of issues back was no less "good", IMHO. And the Request magazine itself is always useful for keeping up on upcoming DVD releases and promotions like the Editor's Picks that Cookie mentioned. And then there are the coupons and point total updates, which are sometimes useful... "Shut up!" the readers shout... 8)
I just got a postcard in the mail the other day, informing me that I have accumulated $75 in discounts since last September. (...And asking me to renew my membership... ^^; ) Do you average better than that?
Our Best Buy sells most of their anime DVDs cheaper than Suncoast's also, but they have a lot less selection. Suncoast has a standing rack 5 or 6 rows high and about 10 feet long; Best Buy's anime section is only four or five rows high and five feet long. I could special order the titles I couldn't find, I suppose, but I think I'd end up doing that more often than not. And anyway, I am not adverse to impulse buying and I like being able to buy something I can walk out of the store with and watch when I get home. If our Best Buy improved their selection significently, I might consider switching. But since they haven't showed much initiative to do that, I'm happy with paying SRP and getting my measly discounts at Suncoast.
Hmmm... is that a fact. I've never heard that before. |

Bought them out . . . a year or 2 ago? Ask any Suncoast employee, they'll verify it. It's no secret - they subject the employees to lame videos with the Best Buy affiliates' logos plastered all over them every 3 months or so. It's why Suncoast now HAS TO sell a certain percentage of "profit" (not-movies, basically), why they have this great big push to get people to get "loyalty" (special orders, Replay and preorders) -- and those 2 reasons are precisely why I quit Suncoast. I hated having to sell shelves for storing movies or a magazine subscription or batteries to someone who just came in to pick up the latest Kenshin. I'm very much a "I know what I want so let's get that and get out of here" kind of shopper, and it kind of embarrasses me to be sold to. I didn't want to subject loyal customers to that. I just wanted to recommend anime I liked to people wandering in with that lost expression. That and the other employees there were nice. And hey, the discount didn't hurt, either (30% off DVD - I tell ya, what a way to watch one's anime collection EXPLODE).
But yeah, I definitely still shop there. And I most certainly have the Replay club. I mean, 5% is better than nothing. And there's always double and triple point weekends. |

Online stores routinely sell dvds 25 - 30% off MSRP. I don't know why they aren't more popular; I love getting all of my discs in the mail, its like christmas an extra 50 times a year ^_^ |

In that case it's too bad Suncoast couldn't have Best Buy's DVD prices. Man, I get batteries pushed on me every time I go to Sam Goody. Emerje |
