Wow...they're a bit late in considering Knockin' on Heaven's Door for nomination. One would think it'd have been in the running for last year's Oscars. Ah well, good to see it's getting recognition regardless.

It's going to go to "Finding Nemo." But, yes, it is nice that those anime titles are being considered.

Well, I wouldn't say that right off. Spirited Away got almost zero exposure prior to the Oscars (it had a theatrical run, but got zilch in advertising), but was up against two Disney movies AND Ice Age. Yet it still won; quite the upset, indeed.

Of course, I wouldn't be disappointed if Finding Nemo won, either. Great film, certainly worthy of such an honour.

Spirited Away had the reviews though.

True, but SA got almost universal critical acclaim unparalleled by any other film of 2002. No anime movie this year can claim that. Furthermore, Miyazaki's film was a children's movie, along with the four other nominees that year. I seriously doubt the Academy will consider any animated feature that is clearly not for kids, at least not this year.

Am I the only one surprised to see Pokemon Heroes on the list? Nothing against Pokemon, but I just don't see this movie as being of the same calibur as the other hopefulls.

If it's anything like this year, than Millennium Actress will be the up-setter. Though I just want any of Kon's movies to be nominated.

I think if anything foreign gets nominated this time, it will be Les Triplettes de Belleville, not that I wouldn't like to see Millenium Actress nominated (and win). I'd say that one or both of Satoshi Kon's films might have a chance of being nominated if there are five nomination berths for "Best Animated Feature", but, should there be just three nomination berths this time, the nominees will be Finding Nemo, Brother Bear (which I saw this evening and liked better than the critics, though it's no Lilo & Stitch), and either Sinbad or Les Triplettes de Belleville.

Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door... not a chance. It came and went from the arthouses in a blip and got almost no critical buzz. Well, okay, before anyone points it out, yes, it did get 69% on the Tomatometer (42 Fresh reviews, 19 Rotten reviews), but most of those positive reviews are from Internet critics, or the uninflential B-level critics from newspapers. In any event, I don't see a movie which requires knowledge of a TV series to fully appreciate winning anything major.

As for the advertising for Spirited Away, it got a typical amount of advertising for a film in limited release, and I saw quite a few TV spots on the Boston network affiliates (which I can watch on Bell ExpressVu).

Knocking on Heaven's door was released in the US in the Spring of 2003, therefore it is in this years running. The Academy has a nomination date [ie the film has to be released] before Dec 31. Therefore, any film which is released between January 1st through Dec 31 is eligible, with a lot of strings attached.

The two films I know are going to be nominated are Finding Nemo and Brother Bear. The Cowboy Bebop movie won't be nominated because it's not a family movie and the Pokemon movie won't be nominated because people will say it's too immature. I will probably go to Finding Nemo because there probably wasn't a bad review for it.

I wonder why, of all the Animatrix shorts, only Final Flight of the Osiris has apparently been submitted. Its virtues are pretty obvious, but there were a lot of good shorts on Animatrix, and Final Flight is the most incomplete storywise, since it's basically a lead-in to the video game.

Cookie and I are a bit stumped on this, as to why it was ineligible.

We're not sure if the release in question is the theatrical or the DVD release.

http://www.oscars.org/76academyawards/rules/rule03.html

Bebop was released on April 4th 2003 in New York and Los Angeles following an initial screening in LA in August 2002. DVD release was 2003-06-24.

We suspect it may have something to do with the Japanese release, which was in 2001 (DVD on 1/25)...

I'll be calling the Academy tomorrow for details.

This means that I have yet to see any of the nominations for this year. I'll have a copy of Millenium Actress to watch in a week or so, but I haven't even heard of half of the movies in that list
