Ok, so I watched the anime and I obsolutely hated the ending! spoiler[Chise killing herself and Shuji being the last person on Earth screams LAME! So Shuji is going to die of starvation in a couple of days... why not just have both of them die during the tsunami and have their spirits remain together forever. Just as lame but atleast he won't starve to death soon.]

Is the ending for the manga the same?

Does the anime even follow the manga? If so, then where does it diverge?

I didn't know if this belonged in the manga section but I have some people whom viewed the anime have read the manga.

I watched the creator interview and he I liked him cause he didn't seem like weird Japanese guy (watch the cast interview in Wolf's Rain volume 1 and all those guys, but specially Kiba's voice actor, creep the hell out of me). Yeah, he didn't interview well and kept saying what I would think is the equivelence of the English slang "uhm", but he is a writer so I let it slide. I think he also mentioned he didn't like what they did with the anime. If he did then I would have to agree.

You need to watch the final episode of the anime again. You didn't get the ending, at all.

I thought what happened was that the tsunami was coming, that big thing came down and blocked him, and only him, from dying (the thing was apparently chise), then it dissolves and she says she'll always live inside of him and that is all he needs to live on...

Uhm I have to admit I wasn't fully paying attention. I was watching the final episode when my sister came down with her 1 year old and I was already half way through the episode and kinda finished the episode while kinda talking to her while she placed her stuff in my closet.

In other words, can you please just tell me. I've been watching Mushishi and I'm in a Mushishi state of mind. Don't know how to explain it but it's just the way I am.

Basically spoiler[Chise ≈absorbs him into her, entirely weaponised, new self. In there Shuji will be able to live, but he cannot have physical contact with her anymore, just communicate with her through the interface.]

It's more or less the same as the manga.

spoiler[Personally I felt the manga could have been better in its final moments. After Chise has to be taken back by the military while almost dying in that fishing village you are riding an emotional high. It allows that high to fall away with the school festival bit and tries to rebuild it with the romance on the lookout. Personally I think a quick transition to the lookout would have kept the emotion going on much stronger (maybe only a chapter in between explaining Chise's Town and how Shuji got back)...after all the manga's greatest feat was the emotion it could evoke.]

Oh... cool?

So they can't reproduce, but they are together I guess...

I guess the ending just wasn't for me. I loved everything up until then. spoiler[So where his parents killed and the rest of the world wiped out and it's just him inside the ultimate weapon?

Now that I think of it a little more. Chise did say that the world was going to end anyway. So if he was gonna die, I guess this was the perfect ending.]

Stupid war. spoiler[Destroying our planet.] Tsk tsk war.

[Edit: I went ahead and put in your missing spoiler tags. Yes, the topic is marked spoilers but it's still a good idea to tag them regardless. - Keonyn]

The war started BECAUSE the world was ending, not the other way round.

No, I'm sorry, that is wrong. Or rather, it is inelegantly expressed, in such a way as to be mostly erroneous.

We discussed this (and some other not-so-evident features of the story) a looong time ago, in this thread. I suggest you read that thread before resuming this conversation.

EDIT: URL corrected.

Hmm, interesting thread abunai; I particularly found the line:

to be somewhat informative.

This thread seems to be a little more useful.

Ouch. On my keyboard, the right square bracket is Alt Gr + 9. Miss the Alt Gr key, and the results are gibberish.

That's the one. Thanks.

Leaving the cause of the war aside for the moment, the end of the world was already approaching before the series starts (and thus isn't caused by the war).

Why the war started... while abunai's logic is flawless as always (^^), it feels a little unnecessary as I think the story works much better without a known cause for the war. So much so, in fact, that I'd be surprised if Takahashi-sensei had thought things out to such an extent as abunai has.
Still, reading that old post feels like watching a tv detective at work Razz

So basically spoiler[She lives in the anime, but she dies in the manga?]I guess you pays your money and you takes your choice. However, I thought that spoiler[Chise had assimilated his consciousness into her infastructure as the final gift to save Suuji from witnessing his physical distruction and death. In other words his body was gone with the rest of the planet, but his consciousness still lives with hers inside that warship/craft/weapon she had become.]

No. She's spoiler[just as dead in the anime. There's no way she can survive, and she more or less comes right out and says that. Her final moments with Shuuji are more in the nature of a mutual reminiscence at death's door, than a goodbye.]

I read only the 1st page of the thread and it was very useful. Now I feel like I understand what Chise actually is and what she stands for. Great message... Still don't like the ending but like I said earlier, if spoiler[the world was to end, then that was the best way to go.]

Possibly, since I don't have the faintest idea what it is.
