I tried to find the best place to put this, and I believe I failed. There was no general musings/random anime thoughts forum heading. I'm sorry in advance if this isn't where something like this can go.

Anyways, I'm sure the moderators will slap me if I'm wrong, so I'll just go on ahead.

News today came out from the U.K. that they dave developed "An unmanned jet capable of striking long-range targets has been dubbed the "combat aircraft of the future" by the Ministry of Defence."

Here is the picture:

As soon as I saw this I could only think of the "Ghost Fighter" from Macross Plus. Here is an image of that plane to compare. Did they steal the design? Reasonable thinking says no. It's just the same stealth bomber design that they've been using for years. Is it cool to think they did? Yes.

*Images are not mine, first one belongs to the U.K. Ministry of Defence, second one belongs to Bandai and affiliates.

Hahaha, I really don't think the unmanned fighter design was stolen from Macross Plus design. Actually, the latter was probably influenced and evolved from the design of stealth bombers, or the like.

The shape and appearance of modern military aircraft are determined by many different things, among those being weight, aerodynamics, stealth requirements, and practicality.

The various aircraft in Macross have questionable aerodynamic qualities, what with all the moving parts and so on, those same moving parts would pretty much trash any stealth capability, all the hinges and joints for the moving parts would make them very heavy, and as for practicality, aside from the maintanence nightmare all those moving parts would present, by the time you finished waiting for the parts to finish moving you could very well be dead. Another kill for the enemy.

So, no, I doubt very much that Macross provided any inspiration.

I'm not absolutely sure, but I don't think that we ever saw the Ghost transform. I believe the only moving parts we saw were the cameras and the parts that were jettisoned/destroyed in the battle.

I'm not disagreeing with you, everything else you said was correct, but the planes you're referencing with the moving parts were the YF-19 and YF-21. I will also admit though that the Ghost may have had more moving parts than were shown in the OVA/Movie.

edit: minor spelling

Yeah, I may have gotten a little carried away there. It's just that those transforming fighters are so ludicrous that whenever I think about Macross, they instantly come to mind. Not my favorite anime mecha, I suppose you could say.

haha I've got to be honest with you, I don't think the two look anything alike. Aside from the fact that they are both unmanned aircraft, which is all to common anyways. But interesting piece of information anyways.

Also thedragon is correct, the Ghost x-9 doesn't transform. Only the YF-19 and the YF-21 do.

I actually feel that it looks more similar to the VF-17 Nightmare, but most of the Valkyrie designs were based off of real fighters which may be a reason for the design similarities.

The real one looks pretty much like a typical stealth bomber which makes perfect sense. The Macross one doesn't resemble it at all aside from the fact that it's vaguely triangular (like all planes). So no.
