I recently looked into picking up the Bebop limited edition boxed set via ebay, only to notice that the entire series comes over 3 DVDs. On a hunch, I checked it out and... sure enough! The Trigun boxed set also comes on 3 DVDs, should you buy it at this very nice price over ebay. Normal retail places like Amazon.com list it as being a 7 disk set, but almost three times the price. Thing is, all the photos look very authentic and the sellers seem very reputable. I'm not sure what to think.
Here is a link to the product in particular:[bootleg url removed -t]Here is a link to the sellers' store: [bootleg url removed -t]Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks.

Virtually all anime dvds on Ebay are bootlegs. The only series I haven't seen a lot of bootlegs for were NGE and FLCL last time I checked.
They are made in Hong Kong by bootleggers. Sometimes they do dvd rips from the R1 dvds, somethime they put fansubs on a dvd. They are inconsistant.
Best indicators are r0, its extremely cheap for a whole series, seller is in hong kong, and it is supposedly an import set.
There is more info about it, but that topic has been done many times.

Ah, so it is just a bootleg. Wow, it sure does look convincing though. In another place I saw an internal view where it has its own professional-looking packaging with all the art extras and silk-screens you'd expect from an official release.
Hmm...
Well, glad I asked. Thanks.

Was the Beebop set 3 dvd? Then that was a bootleg too. If you get a limited edition set for under several hundred, it is fake.

The differencde in the number of discs between the set you found on a reputable site and the one on ebay is also a good tip to let you know when one is a bootleg.

People need to be even more careful on Ebay these days; I'm starting to see sellers who claim their products are not bootlegs and yet they clearly are. For example, I found one seller who is selling bootleg sets of "One Piece" and "Trigun" and others (Region 0, Chinese subtitles, three DVDs for 26-30 episodes), and yet they make this laughable claim:
Quote: | We donot sell bootleg DVDs. All our DVDs are genuine release in Asia or in Europe. Every DVD has its unique ISRC* number. |
What is an ISRC number? Read this statement made directly below the claim above:
Quote: | *The ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) is the international identification system for sound recordings and music videorecordings. Each ISRC is a unique and permanent identifier for a specific recording which can be permanently encoded into a product as its digital fingerprint. Encoded ISRC provide the means to automatically identify recordings for royalty payments. |
So according to this, an ISRC number is used by the music industry to identify their products (a quick check of the internet confirmed this), and last time I checked, anime had nothing to do directly with music. Not only does the seller lie to his customers, he also makes himself look incredibly stupid.
Unless you know how to navigate Ebay and find legitimate products easily, I suggest you stay far away from this site for your anime purchases.

It just takes a bit of brains to shop eBay quite successfully for anime. I'd say over 90% of my collection has come from eBay, and only once have I been burned by a bootleg, when the seller lied to me about the manufacturer.
Do your homework before you shop on eBay. That's all that you have to do....

Just a small note to everyone...some of those three disc sets are from bootlegs and everything like that. However, one of my friends and I have ordered the Japanese version of a series (specifically Trigun and a couple others) that come in 3 disc sets. We got them from [This URL is a known Bootlegging website]

That's NOT the Japanese version.
Trigun in Japan was ... 7(!?) DVDs (for 26 episodes)
.hack//sign was 9 DVDs (for 28 episodes)
.hack//twilight's bracelet was 6 DVDs (for 13 episodes)
Ai Yori Aoshi is 8 DVDs (26 episodes)
Hikaru no Go is 22 discs and counting (75 episodes)
Haibane Renmei was 5 DVDs
Cowboy Bebop was 9 DVDs.
Azumanga Daioh was 6 DVDs.
Mao-chan was 6 DVDs (and each episode was only 15 minutes long!).
These are the typical Japanese release counts. Their prices are also higher (4000-5000 yen per DVD, which equates to $35-45 USD per DVD)
There are _no_ 3 disc Japanese sets to the best of my knowledge. There are some 6 disc sets (Azumanga Daioh, Earth Defence Force Mao-chan), but they are in the minority of Japanese releases. Most Japanese 26-episode series are released on 8 to 13 DVDs.
Even if it's only 6 DVDs, 6*$40 = $240 USD to buy a full series. That's almost TWICE the cost of an American release.
For simplicity's sake: All 3-disc DVD sets are bootlegs.
There are a few cheap releases in Japan -- Kodomo no Omocha was only 3000 yen per disc ($28), but was released on something like 28 DVDs.. that's still $780 invested in ONE series.

Yay! Simplicity! It probably won't sink in, though.

I would invest in Kodocha... Well, probably not $780. I just wish they'd license it over here in the US.

Well I guess that's my fault then . Does anyone know why the Trigun set in Japan was 7 while 8 in the US and why Ai Yori Aoshi was 8 in Japan while 5 in the US, .hack//SIGN is going to be six here in the states (at least it seems that way) but nine in Japan?

Also, does anyone know if there's going to be a release date anytime soon for .hack//Twilight's Bracelet? I've got the first couple books for .hack//Legend Of The Twilight but haven't heard anything about the DVD's.
Again, i'm sorry about the goof up on trusting that website.

The dub is being recorded and Bandai have it on their list of upcoming shows in 2004, so it shouldn't be too long before they annouce a date.
