First off: I'd like to apologize if this issue has already been brought up and addressed, but I haven't been a member of ANN's forum all that long and it was only last year that I first read this series.

Moving on. My main question to anyone out there is whether or not there's even the smallest possibility that Desert Coral's final 2 volumes (numbers 4 and 5) will be translated/released in English? Or if the "semi-permanent hiatus" status it's been labeled with will remain in effect?

The only information I've found is very disheartening thus far. Most notably is the Wikipedia article I found which entails --ultimately-- the unlikeliness of the series' continuation or even further translation:
Quote:
It is unlikely that new volumes will be created. The last, and fifth Japanese volume was released 2004-05. The third was released into English on 2004-11-23. Judging by the interval that has passed between these volumes and the present, its unlikely any more will be either written or translated. For mysterious reasons known only to ADV and the publishers, the Desert Coral series has been put on 'semi-permanent hiatus.' Meanwhile the series remains licensed.

Though this seems pretty damning, I googled a search for any correlating articles and found this site: http://www.comicexpress.de/galerie.php?id=6771&from=result which I'm fairly certain is German. Does this mean that Tokyopop acquired the license after ADV dropped it? Or am I just stumbling upon old information that is now irrelevant? Any response would be greatly appreciated. I've grown very fond of this series and woudl love to see how it ends.

Again, sorry if I'm just rehashing old news.

P.S. I was also considering this if I couldn't get an answer online: but do you think writing in a letter to Anime Insider would be a valid course to maybe getting more information?

It's probably correct to say that no one outside ADV knows, and they aren't talking.

No, that just means that Tokyopop Germany published a German translation of all 5 volumes of the series in Germany. See also here. In terms of Japanese licenses TP USA and TP Germany can be quite independent (especially since TP Germany landed that Viz Europe/Kodansha cooperation deal).

ADV never actually claimed anything was going on indefinite hiatus, they simply stopped releasing most of their titles. They've started a couple of titles up again, but they were ones with rather vocal fanbases and probably sold fairly well (at least compared to everything else they released) to begin with. But at this point, if there isn't any sign of it being started up again, it probably never will. It could but the odds are pretty low and there is no reason to expect it to.

Yeah, curse ADV for all this but oh well. Desert Coral and Jinki Extend were my favorite manga series when ADV canceled both of them.

Tokyopop apparently got the rights to release Desert Coral in certain other languages. I was hoping they could have somehow aquired the rights in English too, but I guess ADV was being evil and not willing to sell their license.

Back then I started boycotting ADV because of that. I've never really let up on thay boycott really. But I'll probably have to, now that Geneon is gone (and I was boycotting them before that anyway). Lol, I boycott everyone. Well, I've never boycotted Funimation, although I have not bought the DBZ Season Sets for the typical reasons (I was tempted to though, they were only $25 at Suncoast at one point, but I forgot and the sale ended).

If there is any glimmer of hope though, Gunslinger Girl recently re-started from ADV Manga. That was another similarly discontinued title for years. So maybe Desert Coral and Jinki Extend may re-start too at some point. Like in 1 or 2 years. Ugh.
