Is that the same as saying it looks dated? Or did they screw up the transfer? Well, if it's either of those it's not going to stand the test of time. This is an old one. Say late 80's to early 90's? I enjoyed this series, when I first came across the manga. But I only own 1 (JP) issue. Yuzo Takada's style is vividly detailed. So of course during my early days of getting into the newer anime and learning about OVAs, this was on my list. Hell, I still have my old "trade" copy tape. I followed the series for a long time but never had the chance to finish. I've never read any of the comics that were translated here. Never knew how long it was until it ended at vol. 40. That's a 20 year "baby" there. But of course the OVA can't sum up everything. I hope that one day, they decide to go back and make this a TV series. It deserves one. But I now finally own the entire series and now I can sit back and finish. I'm so glad that 'Geneon' re-released it and didn't let it fade into obscurity. And yes 3 x 3 Eyes would introduce us early, a young 'Megumi Hayashibara'. Though we wouldn't really know her until 'Cowboy Bebop'. But as you can see she's been involved with two of 'Takada's works, '3 x 3 Eyes', and 'Nuku Nuku'. Coincidence? |

Speak for yourself! I and many other fans knew her as Female Ranma. 1989 (Japan)/1994 (USA). There was also Slayers, which predates Bebop by at least a few years. Plus there was an easy-to-miss role that went mostly ignored. This character called "Ayanami Rei" from this mecha series that's completely forgotten today. Ah well. |

DOH! Oh yeah! That's right. I certainly didn't know about her in 'Ranma', but 'Ayanami Rei' should have been the first thing on my mind. Considering that's where I learned of her. And gawd I hate her singing 'Fly Me too the Moon. But I love her in anything else. See what happens when you think about other things too much? You forget the most obvious. Thank you for bringing me back to my senses. What the hell was I thinking? How the hell could I have missed that?

Not to mention that Megumi has played the lead in every Yuzo Takada animated adaptation to date (in addition to Pai, she was Momiji in Blue Seed and Nuku Nuku in All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku), all of which hit US shores before Bebop did. Good to see a generally positive review for 3x3 Eyes, one of my first anime titles. I enjoyed the original Streamline dub, but the new one isn't bad either. I was completely blown away when Keith David showed up...as Mama, no less.

3x3 Eyes!! I love this OVA to death (though, back in the day when I was an anime newbie I often wondered why Yakumo never opened his eyes unless he was in horrible, intolerable pain). I own the earlier DVD collection, but it's still great to see such a nostalgic treat pop up on the ANN front page. It almost feels like I got a bonus Buried Treasure column this week.

good thing to hear that i'm not the only one who loves this series, now if Dark horse would just come to their senses and release the remaining 31 volumes of the manga i would be thrilled (not happening, i know, but one can always wish.)

3x3 Eyes doesn't hold up that well IMHO. Well the second volume, anyway. Too many minor characters given too much screen time. I think I only liked it the first time, because I "finished" it. It's weird, because I consider Takada to be one of my favorite writers of the last decade, but I can't sit through his shows more than once.
Except for maybe Nuku Nuku.... |

3x3 Eyes was an awesome video series. I have to say, I enjoyed the first four episodes the most of the series. I really like the visual style of the first four. I can't remember which episode it was but, the one where Natsuko gets partially possessed by the Gesu Demon was a really good episode, by far my favorite of the four. The whole series has a heckuva lot of charm to it. The "Legend of the Divine Demon" segment was nice as well, but the first four are some of the first anime I saw when I was really getting into it back in the early 90's so, it really has a special place. I've been waiting for a cheaper release to come out for those so, I'm definitely gonna be picking those up when I get a chance. It warms my heart to see such classic anime getting made more readily available in this day and age. Excellent review Mr. Martin...one of the better ones on the site.

Just as one doesn't expect an old movie (Say Robin Hood or Gone With the Wind) to looks as good as a more recent release? Special effects in Wizard of Oz vs Transformers? Watched Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter the other day with my teen who got a kick out of it, but noticed it looked like something out of the 70's. The point with older titles isn't how it looks (although that in itself can be the charm), but whatever element draws one to it. I don't expect Dragonball Z to LOOK better than Tenjo Tenge, but I sure as hell preferred it overall to the anime version (never read the Tenjo manga-ok, VOl 1 did nothing for me so I didn't pursue it). Same for Saint Seiya (still hoping we'll somehow get the rest here in the US...) & Naruto or DB/Z & Naruto.
I love 3X3 Eyes. I wish someone would re-start the manga Dark Horse dropped |
