Wow. I keep forgetting what a giant mess the wheeling and dealing of giant publishing companies are. Let's not forget that all that manga is approved by giant companies. You're just another penny in their coffer. Meanwhile, we have to deal with these companies to help support creators we like.
Also, it's nice to see Minx being brought to the attention of manga fans. If TokyoPop's American comics pretending to be manga (aka just comics from Japan) can be targeted square at manga fans, then stuff from this new line Minx can too. Meanwhile, I could go on about dozens of stories behind this story. There's the actual monopoly of Diamond as a distributor that makes or breaks the lively hood of every single comic shop in America. One company controls them all as their distributor. Then there's DC, who owns the Minx and CMX imprint. Though DC itself is owned by media giant AOL Time Warner, one of about six giant companies that controls the majority of all media in America. Then there's the oddity of Megatokyo, an American comics, being published by CMX who's focus was supposed to be Japanese comics. Then that leads into DC's management of its imprints, like DC Comics proper (Batman and such), Johnny DC its kids line, Vertigo its mature readers label, Minx which is the new imprint targeted at teen girls, and CMX which was supposed to publish manga and cash in on that craze. CMX rather messed up from step one with Tenjo Tenge as one of its first titles. Plus we have the whole DC acquisition of Wildstorm and its subimrpints like ABC comics. Then you get into stuff like Alan Moore's work he did there to get away from DC being bought by DC after all. Some really messed up stories in that alone. Though those are all discussions for another time. I just want to point out that this is just the tip of the iceberg for anyone interested in the crazy world of publishing. Never mind that this is just the smaller pond of comics and graphic novels and such. You know what. Maybe you don't want to know how your favorite manga title ends up on the shelf of you local giant book chain. |
