I started watching this series on VOD near the beginning of the summer and they put up the last 3 episodes this week.
After watching this entire series over the summer and seeing that ending (I don't want to spoil) that was beautiful! It was....just whoa! It was just an epic series that has so many aspects of anime someone would like. After watching it I just sat there, turned off the TV and thought "That was so amazing. Nothing I watch after that could top it today. What now!" I do have some questions and comments about the series but WARNING! IF YOU DON'T WANT ANYTHING SPOILED DON'T KEEP READING! IM SAYING THIS JUST IN CASE! DON'T KEEP READING IF YOU HATE BEING SPOILED LIKE ME. (Like Deathnote was spoiled for me! Damn you Deathnote people spoiling the ending!) spoiler[What is up with Merle's people? Are they rare and hunted like those twin catgirls? I didn't understand why Folken's wings turned black. Why? Did anyone else think that Celena (who's a girl) turned into Dilandau (who's a guy) was a bit effed up!? That fact put into the series threw me for a minor loop because that was super unexpected. I did expect her to show up as an enemy against Van, Allen and Hitomi but not like that! Did anyone ever say WHY the mystic moon is so cursed?!] END OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS I need to show my friends this. I want to marathon this definitely. I'm a total Van fangirl now. Oh yeah, I definitely loved this series quite a bit. Definitely one of my all time favorite epic anime storylines. As far as your questions are conserned, at least the ones I can answer anyways
 (sorry, it's actually been a while since I've seen it):
spoiler[If I remember correctly, I believe it had something to do with the fact that he commited a terrible sin against his own people. I'm not sure though, it really has been a while.]
spoiler[Yeah, that was pretty interesting!  It was kind of weird to because throughout the series I kept on wondering what gender Dilandau was until they said he was a guy (which was weird enough to know in the first place), then all of a sudden, He's a girl!! I mean, what a way to make her the last person you'd ever expect, man!]

1. Yes, It seems that way, judging by the dialouge and some flashbacks.
2. You see it in X and Haibane Renmei too where the black wings reflect someone impure who has sinned greatly. spoiler[They also mention that Folken had been experimented upon by them as well after they saved his life.] 3. That was wierd yes, and I thought it was a really great twist personally since I was not expecting it. 4. Yes, because spoiler[ it, (Earth) was the origin of the winged people (an Atlantis reference if you read the subtext of their story) with the advanced technology who were responsible for creating Gaia and all the people there. ] I'm not quite sure if they actually said it was supposed to be spoiler[Atlantis] since it's been so long since I saw the series last, but I do remember it was heavily implied at least. spoiler[That's pretty easy, Folken was a sorcerer for Zaibach, his work led him to meddle with the fabric of the universe and led to the adverse reaction of his wings changing color. From a symbolic standpoint his wings changing black point tot the idea that he was corrupted by his involvement with Zaibach, in a fundamental way that couldn't be changed, even as towards the end he renounces his past and seeks to make amends.]
spoiler[The mystic moon (earth) was the original home of Atlantis. It's further explained that the inhabitants of Gaia hold the descendants of Atlantis as being cursed (RE: Van's mother). Given the fiery downfall of that civilization, such as Hitomi saw in her vision, it would be no surprise that the Gaians would believe such things, whether their was a ever a real "curse" in a magical sense being another matter. Of course, that's only the most basic of understandings; more elaborate theories have been proposed. One that I've heard has to do with the inevitable fate of the planet. Atlantis met it's doom when mankind overstepped it's bounds and tried to take on divine powers of controlling fate itself; the atlanteans new that the same would happen again, or so the theory goes. In that sense the mystic moon really was cursed, it would again face a similar destruction, that fate was inevitable not because some spell had been cast over it, but because the knowledge of how to control destiny was only waiting to be rediscovered. The central irony being than that the dangerous knowledge was reawakened not on earth but on gaia itself, though by visitors from the planet (Isaac first and Hitomi second), so perhaps it's not so ironic at all.] |

The show is good, but I never much liked the ending.
Then again, how could anyone dislike a show in which one of the main characters is spoiler[Sir Isaac Newton]? |

I'm just upset that spoiler[Van and Hitomi never kissed. It's so unfair to the poor shippers, who had to endure the Hitomi/Allen kiss!]. But I love the series to death anyway, it was one of the first anime I really loved.

spoiler[It could also be much simpler than that. I haven't rewatched in a while (intend to the next rainy weekend), but I think I remember him telling Hitomi not to be too distressed about her vision of his death because he was terminally ill anyway (presumably because of experimentation). I took the black wings as a sign that he didn't have much time left - incredibly tragic considering that he had seen his terrible mistake and was trying to make up for it and finally had a realistic chance of having Van back as a brother. Oh man I totally loved Van as well.  While I was watching the show whenever spoiler[Hitomi would get too close to Allen I would want to scream at her "No! Not him! You know it's Van who you really love!" I got a little frustrated at her indecisiveness]. Heh.
Yes I would have really liked it spoiler[if they kissed in the end.  I was waiting for it to happen too.]

Ah yes, Escaflowne, the series that really catapulted me in to the anime fandom. I watched anime prior to this series, but it wasn't until I saw this on TV in the mornings and found it was censored that I decided to buy a series. Since then I've been buying series frequently.
I have to say the series was very well paced, probably one of the best when it comes to pacing that I can think of off hand. They managed to keep an intricate plot flowing very well and didn't rely on too many cliches. The one episode I did not like was actually the first, it just seemed to drag on and did consist of a few cliches and played like an episode of Dawson's Creek. |

Both me and my brother love Escaflowne.
It was one of the first Animes we saw when it was broadcasted on Cartoon Network, or a similar station... I don't remember which. One thing that really impressed me was the way in which they depicted how the Guymelefs were piloted. That really sold to me that great, whacking big mecha were in a fantasy story. My only gripe about the series was it was a bit too short. I think they could have made it just a bit longer, maybe 10 or so more eps. It just went too quickly.
Still an amazing series which I can watch again and again. |

Gundam Junkie: Im extemely sure that this series was never aired on cartoon network.. i've been watching the channel for 10 yrs now.
And as far as escaflowne goes... I loved the movie. But I've heard so many bad things about the series (and its art *shudder*) that i dont think ill give it a try. |

Really? In general it's the movie that gets the bad buzz and the series that gets the praise. Frankly, the series was about 100x better than the film I thought. The film removed so much, including the amazingly well thought out villain the series had, instead turning Folken in to a 1-dimensional cliche villain instead of the intricate well done character he was in the series.
As for when it was aired, it was on a saturday morning block on either the WB or Fox for awhile. I'm pretty sure it was on the WB since they had Pokemon and I know they played Escaflowne back to back with Pokemon on saturdays. The version aired though was so severely edited that the episodes didn't even end or start in the right places. If I recall the series never even lasted until its conclusion, I believe they pulled it about halfway through. |

This series was my introduction to my favorite new director Kazuki Akane. He also did the storyboard for the first two and last three episodes. I remember thinking how amazing these episodes were when I first saw them.
I love how Folken and Van remind me of Shun and Daisuke in Heat Guy J. There is something about the brotherly tension in both series that seem very solid to me. spoiler[The parallel about Daisuke and Shun being descended from the Celestials also seem reminiscent of Escaflowne] Since Escaflowne I also really enjoyed both Geneshaft and Noein as well. I also notice that he loves the "reaching to the sky while the camera tilts up" shot which can be seen at the ending of a few of his OP credits. Despite the similarities there is something very unique about each of his series. There are some themes like destiny, human's relation with technology, and family ties that you will find, yet each show seems executed differently and (besides Nobuteru Yuki) tend to have different character designs and OST composers. I believe Akane is the most under appreciated contemporary director. It is hard to tell what a director (general not episode) does for a series since so many of them take there entire team including composers, character designers, storyboard, and animation directors from production to production. Akane is one of the few who seems bring in new people with each project. According to the Encyclopeida there are no ther staff members who have worked on these four projects, yet Akane has been credited for 3-7 positions in these projects. |

Besides Scrapped Princess -which I urge everyone to watch- this is one of the better fantasy series out there in terms of plot twists, setting and music.
My only gripe was how the Hitomi/Van thing seemed rushed; it was as though spoiler[Hitomi decided out of the blue to stop loving Allen and love Van instead and so unlike many people I wasn't all that bummed that they didn't share a kiss in the end], it could've been so much better. |

FOX aired Escaflowne in their Saturday morning line-up for about a month or maybe two and it was here that I believe it was the most edited (they didn't air the first episode, just covered it in flashbacks in episode 2). They didn't play the entire show however and I know it has been aired on other stations subsequently. |
