I'm surprised to hear the English dub for this of all anime is actually having problems.

Despite the minor problems, this show deserves the high scores. It is beautiful to look at. I pre-ordered both sets and I am so glad I did.

There actually was a Blu-ray solicited with Part 1 but it was removed because the Japanese licensors told them to wait. The reason was to prevent reverse importation for when the Japanese release their Blu-ray. |

I've held off on this series because I know there's no end in site and I've pretty much come to the point where I don't like to start never-ending stories. I've experienced too many dropped licenses, sick/burnt out manga-kas, cancellations due to poor sales, etc. Based on your review I will probably give it a chance. |

I was really enjoying this series (subbed) until it got to the end and I was like, what? That's it? But I want more! Only to learn of the origins of the Guin Saga and that the books aren't available in English and the anime is probably not going to be continued. Which is a shame.
I don't know how their financials turned out, but if they didn't make money on this, it's not the fault of the anime/production itself, it's poor management or marketing or something like that. |

Rinda... ugh... After the first like 5 episodes she turned into the most garbage character and just ended up being Orihime, "Guin" "Guin" "Guin" "Guin" "Kurosaki-kun."
Other than that, good show, I am very interested in seeing where this goes from here. |

A few of them are, actually. But in Japan there are well over a hundred of them, and the author died before completing it (assuming a "completion" was ever planned). |

True. Given the fact that she started as really down to Earth character her transformation to typical damsel in distress crybaby disappointed me much and didn't let to enjoy the rest of the series

If the dub is that weak, I think I'll stay away. I didn't really care for the sub, honestly, and the rather cheesy high fantasy setting isn't something I can get into without a dub.
Though I'm still pleasantly surprised to hear that David "Golgo 13" Wald got the titular role & is performing well (even by the harsh ANN dub reviews). I was sure that someone like Andrew Love would have landed the role. Perhaps "Needuresu" had him tied up. Speaking of Golgo 13, perhaps by now they can get back to work on that. (I suppose I should add that I did see all of this with the sub, but the dub adds an extra--hilarious--perspective.) I'm not surprised that the dub feels rushed, for as has been remarked on ANN & is plain to see from credits, Stephen Foster is directing a vast majority of the dubs. Stephen Foster has said that when working on an awesome show he does not prefer to work on other shows, especially if those other shows are rather mundane. Plot-wise, this work is incredibly stupid, poorly thought-out. And I mean both tactic and strategic events.
This happens when authors are either lazy, have low quality standards, or are genuinely stupid themselves to come up with developments, which do not look like acts, badly glued together through very specific, but improbable circumstances. This tampers with immersion in the story much more than the whiny princess. No wonder that this work received just "good" mark as average, which usually means that it is no better than decent. |

Having recently finished watching this on Netflix, I would have to rank this as one of the worst dubs I have recently watched.
It started out decently enough, although even from the beginning there were many instances of the dialog not coming close to matching the lip flaps for Guin. Without seeing the same scenes with Japanese dialog, however, I could not judge if perhaps the lip flaps were simply too inadequate to make sensible dialog fit, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. The worst offenses came near the end, with some truly cringe-worthy dialog that sounded more like something one would find in out-takes as extras on a DVD. One of these came when Lady Amnelis was informed spoiler[by one of her attendants of her younger brother's death.] |

The animators clearly made no attempts for any sort of natural movement. The only problem I had with this dub was the minstrel. It seemed almost like they were planning on using the Japanese song when casting the dub, but then couldn't for some reason. Other than that, I enjoyed all the main performances and thought all the leads were well cast. However, with some of the questionable dubs Funi has put out since moving to box sets, and some of the bargain priced dubbed re-releases Media Blasters has put out, I've had to lower my standards somewhat. |

Steven Foster can direct well, sometimes even when he takes liberties with the script, but I've gathered that Guin Saga is not such a success. This seems like it should have been pretty easy to give at least an adequate dub instead of something that's a throwback in the worst way. The silly lines are Fosterism, but the acting quality evokes 'classic' Central Park Media work.

Still, the visuals are mostly great, a pleasure to watch, and the music is epic. So while the project is not good, it is really decent.
By the way, the character of Astrias is probably the most charming (including the voice of Japanese actor), along with the blond child and the guy who was killed in the beginning of the series, among all of them. Not any one of more important cast. |
