Yeah, like the title says.

I’m currently having a crisis of confidence in my decision to collect anime. It all just seems so expensive with many purchases being 3-4 episodes for up to £20- with one DVD worth four and a half volumes of manga. I do enjoy both but I need your opinion (despite what I said in the opinion thread Razz)- do you prefer anime to manga, or perhaps avoiding that one do you enjoy it? Do you feel it adds more to the overall story- because I do admit colour, animation, voices and especially music do seem to add more to the experience.

I think the problem is mainly due to me planning to go to University- I need to save some money up (I do have quite a bit actually), but having spent so long collecting manga I now find DVDs quite expensive- despite having previously brought two or so xbox 360 games a month as well as DS games. As I look at purchases in the back of my mind a small voice says “You’d save more money if you just brought manga!”

So do you think I’d make a mistake by ‘giving up’ on anime? Oh and because it’d be a good idea to mention it, I don’t prefer reading over watching or vice versa.

Cheers for any help to this misguided soul.

Well, most people wait for specials at rightstuf.com (up to 88% off) and animenation.com

Also, not many people buy single dvd releases. Economy digipacks and thinpacks can be bought (entire series) for ~40$

So, its not like you need to spend 140$ on a series, not at all.

And yes, with all the amazing titles out there, its absolutely worth buying.

I would try to find somewhere were you could rent anime. I don't know of any online sites that work outside the US, but I'm sure that there's some out there.

As much as I love buying anime... I honestly should look into a rental place. It's getting ridiculously out of hand. But the sad thing is, I get such satisfaction from opening my delivery boxes and popping in the latest disc, and then it looks so nice on my shelf when done.

Maybe if anime was all I spent money on, it'd be okay, but I also like manga, regular books, going out to eat, watching movies; not to mention paying rent, bills, and unexpected problems like car trouble. (stupid "check engine" light taunting me)

So yeah, if I were you, I'd start seeing if there was a rental site you could use. Maybe I'll do the same. Sad

So far, all I've bought has been single DVDs, because, I came into the anime world, unaware of the existence of box sets. I thought, at the time, that there was only single DVDs and single DVDs that came with an artbox to hold the others as you got them. Then, later on, I realized there were boxsets. So, now, I plan on buying more box sets and less singles. I still wanna finish the shows I'm still in the middle of getting (by buying singles), but then, I want to buy mainly box sets, unless, there's an anime that doesn't yet have a box set, and I still really want it anyway. Luckily, though, I've managed to find some really good deals on some of the singles, so I haven't been totally jipped on it. I mean, some people just buy everything regular price--hell, some even MSRP. Imagine how much people who buy singles like that are getting jipped? At least, if I don't get such a great deal, I'll still get the lowest price out there--even 10% off, sometimes, if I have a coupon.

That's funny, my Mom's car has that light on, too. We don't know what it is. It's been on for a while, yet, the car seems to drive fine. We still have to get it checked out.

Don't give up anime just because it's a financial burden. Your money troubles seem to do more with having many interests related to anime (video games and manga, etc) plus wanting to go to school.

Talking from experience I have been on rather varied financial spectrums; at one point earning more money than I knew what to do with and basically buying on average 3 anime titles per week at full MSRP to not even being able to afford 1 DVD per month! Anime really is like a drug, if you are already addicted no matter how much it costs you need to get it. If you don't feel that need is strong enough then perhaps you are more of a casual fan than you think. Plus there are more questionable ways to obtain all the anime you are capable of watching with your free time.

Also your situation differs from mine in that I am strictly an anime fan, and I rarely indulge in manga but I am an anime-style RPG video game fan (just picked up LoH III for PSP). I am strongly convinced that anime alone can provide enough entertainment and pleasure from the genre without ever having to pick up any manga. Almost all anime is produced for an audience who may not be interested in reading the background stories that may be present in the manga they were adapted from. But reading manga usually is a good way to get more out of an anime series that can't go in further detail with typical episode runs.

Don't let it go that way for too long. I asked my Service Advisor how long I could have driven the car with that light on, he said "For a while...until you fried the entire car computer system."

I also have horror stories of the check engine light, it's worth getting checked out. Really. One time I had to have the whole engine replaced (though I didn't think it was worth it but my mom paid for it to be fixed).

Personally I prefer to by manga over anime, so I'm more likely to pay full price for a manga while an anime dvd I might try to find good deals. Most of the time I hold out for sales TRSI has or ADV has on their sites, I'll often get my secondary manga titles this way (ones where I'm not in a hurry to pick up each volume).

I love to play video games, but I noticed once I went to collage, I just didn't have the time time to play as many. So that cut the cost on video games a lot. Though I did pick up a quite a few DS titles, because I rode the train to school and it was something to pass the time. When it comes to big console RPGs I just held out for my favorite series. But I went from before school spending $100-150 a month in games to around $30-50.

Yeah, it's been like that for about a month, but fortunately I don't drive my car to work, and only use it for grocery shopping, or for meeting friends for dinner. I'm DEFINITELY taking it in once I get back from Comic-con.

I myself enjoy owning my entertainment, whether it be books or anime, but it truly depends on the type of person you are. If you are the type of person content to rent anime and know that you will always be able to rent a certain series, there is no need to buy it. My suggestion would be to rent until you've saved money- if when you are finally financially stable with disposable income you would like to buy, go for it. I also never buy single dvds but instead buy box sets. What's the point of a single dvd with a few episodes unless the series is in-progress? Hopefully if you're buying single dvds you like the entire series so just buy that.

Don't give up watching anime though (not that I think you would Smile) If worst comes to worst as long as you have a computer and internet you can get it.

I understand where you are coming from dude. I was in a very similar situation when I was at uni too, though I had to choose between giving up anime/manga or US comic books (I was a huge Marvel fangirl at that time). I had very limited funds after paying for rent, bills & food & I couldn't sustain both hobbies, so though it pained me a great deal at the time, I stopped reading Marvel comics. Anime cry
It has been nearly 14 years since I graduated from uni; I now have a full time job, I'm happily married, & after paying the mortgage & bills, I'm left with a nice little sum for luxuries. A lot of that cash goes on my anime hobby, & to make it go further, I import R1 DVDs from the US. I agree with you, a RRP of £20 for 3-4 episodes IS a bloody rip-off. I don't buy the British versions unless they're are on sale these days. Mad

Should you ditch anime to go to uni? Hmm, tough to say to be honest but as Past has already said, your finances will change over time so instead of giving it up altogether, why not just limit your buying habits till you can find it on sale? play.com always has stuff on sale, & amazon.co.uk have alot of their DVDs on rental too, though I don't know if anime is included in their rental titles.

As for your question on whether I enjoy anime or manga more, I watch way more anime series than I read manga. I love the vibrant colours, the kinetic energy displayed in the animation, & I love hearing the Japanese language. And perhaps also, my favouring anime is a subconscious 'backlash' against manga because I had to drop so many US comic titles back when I was at uni. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop

As sad as it sounds, I almost enjoy merely owning the anime/manga as watching it. Seeing the collection, knowing I made it and invested my time into it. Like you said- just looking at the shelf. My money problem isn't so bad...it's just as my Mum says- I always want everything as soon as I can Embarassed The main problem is just I keep thinking that a bit much, I could get more manga...I do have an ok level of money.

Sorry about the car problems. I don't actually own one/drive (still a bit scared Crying or Very sad ) so thats one less financial burden.

So, my two cents to this subject. To me, it has been worth buying anime for a while now, because I don't know whether or not something might find its way onto my computer. Other than that, you get to watch over and over. Usually for me when I've paid quite a bit for a series, it has proven to be well worth the spending, and those are the series I watch again, like Hellsing Ultimate.
