It was sort of a lousy poll anyway. The options pretty much force somewhat extreme positions. I can'ts see my opinions falling into any of those categories. I'm certainly more fond of it than, "I'm intrigued, but not terribly impressed." But "It's an incredible cinematic art form." is rather over the top and would tend to represent the kind of anime fan that drives me mad.

That poll has the textbook examples of loaded questions.
"Incredible Cineamatic Format"? Thats like asking if "Film is an Incredible Cineamatic Format" |

Wow, talk about one sided.
You either think anime is the best thing in the world Don't care Think it's awful Hate it Or hate it a lot I love anime, but I wouldn't go as far as to say "It's an incredible cinematic art form". Anime is far to varied, it would be like puting the Lion King and Sponge Bob on the same level. Emerje |

Exactly. That was an extremely loaded and one-sided poll. Highly unprofessional, given the otherwise respectable nature of the site it appeared on.

and you think CNN's quickpolls are any better? these polls aren't meant to be scientific, and don't have to be fair. ... and they don't even mean anything when they're answered. calm down folks, it's not the end of the world if a few people don't like anime. ;) |

CNN are professional & respectable? Anyway, I agree that it's really just nothing to get worked up over. Just can't help but get a little miffed when a high-traffic site like that says something ignorant about something I'm a little passionate about.
Would it be wrong or elitist if I said I actually kinda like that? The relatively small size of the anime fan community...I dunno...seems kinda cozy? Plegh, I'm bad at finding words to describe stuff like that. Ignore me. |

Wrong only in the sense that you're about 15 years too late to be having those kinds of thoughts. Whenever you first got interested in anime, there were already plenty of other people who didn't want "newbies" like you to ruin the scene. Of course, the scene isn't THAT much worse for your existance, is it? So, no, it's not reasonable for you to have the same sorts of thoughts about others. |

It's still a niche market, though. Yes, it's grown exponentially recent--ah f*ck it...

I'm not worked up over the poll per se, the whole thing looks more like a joke than anything. Really, who puts 'dude' in a poll? Er, other than MTV?

I second that. Personally, I'm amused by the entry "Ick, too violent." Er, I've seen a hell of a lot worse in live action than I have in anime. Some of our "classics" are more . . . intense than any anime I've seen. Then again, this is all formulated on opinion so who am I to argue? |

I'm not giving an opinion as to whether or not it's a "good" or a "bad" thing, but, yeah, if you ignore the popularity of the kiddy TV franchise stuff, I, for one, certainly have no problem still using the word "niche", as in "Babylon 5-popular" or "Farscape-popular", not "Friends-popular" or "Monday Night Football-popular", and I don't think it ever will be all that popular with North American adults, or, at least, not popular enough for the non-kiddy stuff to get released in true "wide" release in theatres or shown on NBC, CBS, FOX or ABC in prime time. |

Thank you! Thank! You! That's exactly what I was trying to say. Anime may be experiencing an upsurge in popularity recently, but it's still very much a cult subculture thing. And once the mainstream gets tired of it (as sad as it sounds, today's mainstream has the attention spam of a garden slug and anime is their latest "flavour of the month," right up there with reality TV and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), we'll still be a nich cult subculture market, same as always.
