Ran a forum search and didn't get any hits for this topic so I'm starting a thread.
1) Do you ever feel like you might be posting too much or that you spend too much of your time reading posts?
2) What do you consider to be too much posting? Is there such a thing?
Well, those are my questions for all of you my fellow forum junkies. As for myself, I don't feel like I post too much but I do think I spend way too much on ANN in general. I think I'm averaging around 4-5 hours a day. I'm supposed to be studying and doing my work like a good college student, but the lure of anime is strong.
As to my second question, I think a person is posting too much when their posts lack substance or relavence. That's limited here on ANN, thanks to the mods, but occasionally such posts do pop up and while they may not be breaking teh rules, sometimes they are an aggravation. My least favorite posts to read are the ones that inject politics or religion into a thread that had nothing to do with either prior to the post. When you start turning a thread into a soapbox for your personal views, you're posting too much in my opinion.
So, what are your opinions my friends?
Mods: I think this thread is okay, but if I'm wrong, feel free to stab a stake through its heart and chop off its head.

It's a good question, and one I've considered myself recently. I average about six posts a day, which I feel is ok as the vast majority of them add substance to the topic at hand; I've only ever made a single one-liner post and I rarely give my opinion if it would be reiterating a point already made several times. However, I do feel I spend a bit too much time on ANN, as although the last few days it's been no more than a half hour, usually I spend around 1.5 hours a day cruising around the forums, news, and encylopedia sections.
In regards to the second question, there is definitely such a thing as posting too much. Here's a few indicators I use to determine if a members posts are on the whole legit or post-whoring of the highest order;
- If the majority of their posts are one-sentence,
- If the majority of the topics they've created have been locked,
- If they consistently (This is important, as once or twice is understandable) break forum rules, and
- If their post average over an extended period is over a dozen posts per day.
As long as you avoid these pitfalls, post to your hearts content as your adding both insight and vitality to the ANN forums!

All I know is that, this is the longest and most frequently I've posted on this board since starting here. I used to hate it here, and the mods with their anal rules and what not (hehe, No offense, I love you guys ) but I've adhered to the rules, and when I see people make the kind of posts I did, I realize how moronic it made me look (btw, the Adult Swim forum is ugly as hell by comparison, so the mods here do a fantastic job). This really is one of the best places to really discuss anime without seeing the same threads over and over.

My answers:
1) Yeah, I'm over reading posts here... See, right now, I'm in class and I'm not listening to the teacher... Hahaha
2) Well, I've over posted one day, and the moderators have to delete my posts... I have to say, that day was just like chatting, hehehe... They said I was over quoting... But it's alright, I've learned my lesson!

Well I get on around 2-ish everyday...mostly because that is how it ends up when I plan out my day...sometimes sooner sometimes later, I spend about a 20 minutes reading all the new posts, I stay on for about 7 hours. I think my average posts per a day is 4 or 5. I don't think I post too much though I have to admit most of my posts aren't all that long or that in depth. I probably post to casually then I should but for the most part I stay on topic.

I find myself popping on maybe once a day since I joined, sometimes more. Actually, the reason why I like this forum is simply BECAUSE of the moderator's rules. With such diligent people enforcing order here, I can rest assured that the average amount of intelligence I find per post is at least somewhat higher than any other forums I might frequent...

1. I don't honestly feel I post too much or spend too much time reading posts. I am on at work often but only during off time. I'm a senior teller at a bank so I have lots to do usually. We have down times or slow times when instead of gabbing about American Idol I check the forums. I'll be "on" for hours at a time but just leave the page up while I do my job. I check off and on while at mhome or out with my laptop but that's about it. I set a small goal of 5-7 posts a day if possible. I just like to feel i've done something. Some days I can't get on and some I do double or triple my goal, usually on weekends.
2.If you're on here instead of doing work or paying attention in class then that's too much. need to focus on important things first, anime second. Unless your job is anime, but that's different. If you also have to post in EVERY thread you're here too much. One other instance is the thread bumper. The guy who bumps his own threads by watching them non stop and after each reply he posts another. Noticed one of those just yesterday.

I used to be a forum junkie on this art forum that I was regular member at. I spent all my time there, when I wasnt on Live Journal or Deviant ART that is. Basicly I was addicted to the internet, and even in computer classes I would sneak on as much as I could. That all changed recently, when I kind of finnaly got a life (I really didn't have one before) outside of the net. Then I stopped going online altogether, and its only very recently that I started visiting web forums again at all. But I try to use the internet in moderation, so that I dont become what I used to be, a mindless internet zombie, again. So, no, I dont think that I post too much, certainly not here as theres not often more then one or two threads here at once that Im interested in overly much.

Well I'm still on holidays and I come on ANN for about a 15minutes at a time, maybe 3 times a day. I probably do post too much but it doesn't really bother me because sometimes I prefer to be on a forum interacting with other people than just watching tv or anime. If I spent all the time I did on ANN watching anime, I'd have finished about 5 more series . There have been a couple of days where I found myself refreshing the page to see if anyone had posted anything else, but those days it was like 42*C outside and I couldn't bear to do anything outside the perimeter of my air-conditioned home. I'm bad at marathoning anime, I have so much to watch right now but instead I just read up about them on ANN. I don't have any immediate commitments, such as school or work for ANN to distract me from. In fact I'm just waiting for my departure date to Japan where I doubt I'll be visiting ANN at all.
Hmm I don't know if there's a thing as too much posting. There's definitely a thing as too much unnecessary posting, but as long as you're contributing all your relevant knowledge to the discussion then it shouldn't matter if you're posting every two replies, obviously unless it interferes with your real life commitments.

I like it here too because of that. I go to other forums and moderators don't do jack squat about people using bad language or one liners.

In reference to question number one, if you look at my join date and then the number of posts I have, you probably get an idea of how often I am on here Seriously, when I don't have school or work then I can spend a good two hours straight here on ANN. On average I probably spend somewhere between 3-6 hours a day, and on days when I don't post a lot one or two posts, but there have been days when I've posted twenty.
In reference to number two, I guess I don't qualify for that because a majority of my answers are going to be pretty detailed ones, like I've learned to do while being here. I remember when I first came onto the forums, and I wasn't one of the best posters, I can tell you right now. I was one of the reasons why certain threads would get locked, and I would get PM warnings from a certain mod (not going to say who). I would think I was also on admin's "keep an eye on this guy" list.

Join the club. I've managed to piss off 2 mods, one before he became a mod, 1 admin, and even had the balls to bitch at Tempest. Common sense, who needs that right? I came here used to the crap at other forums where you either carry a big stick or get hit by one. The iron fist regime here, as I called it at first, took me off gaurd. Somehow I didn't get the boot, I always thought a certain mod who's PM'ed me often maybe stuck up for me and suggested I get a second chance. Not sure, just a theory. Since I've tried to make more detailed posts so even if I do post often it won't come off as simple trolling and thread bumping.

It also aggravates me; they are a waste of time to read and to post for the poster, not to mention they don't look good at all, especially with multiple posts that discuss the topic at hand intellectually and in depth. Also, posts that do nothing but reiterate what's already been said gazzillions of times also aggravate me and they are as good as spamming to me.
I only post -whether on ANN or whatever- when I have something meaningful that could contribute to the discussion as a whole or when to reply to someone who quoted me, but even in that case I try to say something that wouldn't feel like a waste of breath.

I seriously doubt anyone is going to accuse me of posting too much.
<--------------
Like psycho, I leave my browser open to the forum page most of the day and simply click refresh. When doing hours of Calculus, I'll need to rest my eyes for a few minutes and that's when I'll come here and check up on, since there are rarely non-fansub anime discussions, the few threads that I keep track of. That, or I'll read through some of the bookmarked threads that I have done a search for.
No one who actually has something to say should be accused of posting too much. That said, there are several who never really have anything to say, but still manage to flood the forum with posts. There are also people who create threads too frequently, often bumping their own threads out of the way. You need to give any one discussion time to develop; otherwise, you should just go to a chatroom.
Since others brought it up, I think the moderators are too lenient.

As to the first question of posting to much or spending too much time reading posts, I don't post too much. I often struggle to find meaningful replies that isn't a reiteration of another's post and therefore meaningless or because it is hard for a newer poster such as myself to feel welcome here where clear relationships have been established already and I don't like to feel like I am intruding. Perhaps that seems silly to many of you more out-going types, but for me it is a valid reason to not post. Once I get to know people here and feel accepted, I will losen up and post more.
I do however spend a great deal of time reading posts here. I have been in many other forums which started decently and where I did feel comfortable, even becoming mod at a few, however, they deviated from their original intent which was anime and strayed into a striaght chat board which doesn't interest me.
Here I can read lots of mostly intelligent posts about a topic which interests me, which is anime, and the rest of the chatter is limited (not entirerly eliminated) which I appreciate. I think there is a nice balance here.
I feel the question of "what do you feel is too much posting" has already been answered quite well, so I shall not try to add anything to that.

It depends on the topics and my mood... But I have to admit I love this forum. Especially because of the rules. I wish the other forums were as strict as this one (it'd make posting even better without having to read fangirl posts or senseless sentences)
