Just thought I'd ask, because according to Animation Collective and Viacom, Nick's owners, they call it an "anime" even though it's made in the USA.

I was wondering that as well. I looked it up a couples months back and wonder the same thing. The nearest thing to it is Kappamaki and the Sushi Kids. I think this show should be added though.

Kappa Mikey falls into the realm of shows that are styled artistically after anime (see also Teen Titans). Anime, under the US definition of the word, relates to shows that are created in Japan, not America, and thusly is not in the encyclopedia.

Isn't there some Korean Anime in the encyclopedia as well though? I would think Kappa Mikey might be put in though because it was about anime and runs with the theme all throughout it show. Teen Titans however, is based on DC comic book that looks nothing like the show. The show has a few anime aspects to it, but I wouldn't think of it as anime. |

No, Kappa Mikey isn't anime...it's a parody of anime. I don't really think it has any place in the encyclopedia. Anime is Japanese anime. *shrug*
Note that I'm not really saying anything about quality. I like "anime-styled" cartoons like Teen Titans and Avatar...but I don't think they're really anime. |

There might be some Korean original works in there, but I suspect a lot of it's work that was outsourced there. Back to the other topic at hand. the_silent_child, just because a show is about anime cannot change the fact from where it originated. To me, this would prevent its inclusion into the encyclopedia. |

Seeing as this is more of an Encyc. question, I'm moving this topic to the Encyc. forum.

Kappa Mikey is not listed because it is not anime. Simple as that. It's a crappy show that clearly mocks anime because US animators can't produce anything other than Barbie videos, crappy sequels of old Disney films and kiddie cartoons about talking animals and superhero cartoons where the bystanders really do have parachutes and villains do go to other dimensions. At least, this is what most of American animation is.

Sky Blue is in the encyclopedia because Tin House (a company that had previously worked on anime) took part in the animation for it. Kappa Mikey on the other hand isn't anime (despite what Nickelodeon says) nor does it really have any significant connection to anime. It isn't going to be added: animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14512 |

Two words: AT ALL! yep, the show is not anime, infact, this "larry s." guy is totally responible for this show, half of the show's production crew did most of the anime work, plus, not to be Ozu-ish on this topic, but don't you think this show should at least of respect as an american cartoon rather than anime (well, there are other look-alikies in the us) plus the show is also made by 4Kids (see their corperate site, under services, you'll see the show name there....) they're also responsible for it. if you need me, i will contiune to bash on another crappy show from disney channel, and its not Hannah Montanna.... (not to be offensive to the teen-idol community...) --The FZ P.S. i still think the show should be represented as an anime/american show from the same company who once blew it doing One Piece dubz.... [Ninja-edit: in the name of all "woo-foo" the show i was going to bash was already listed in the rejected list, ah pellets.... -FZ] |

Kappan Mikey is related to anime in some ways.
It's visually styled to look *somewhat* like anime, although I don't believe the intent was to completely mimic anime. They didn't want it to be mistaken for anime (despite what the Marketers at Nick say). It parodies anime. It's recorded at NYAV post, one of the leading North American ADR studios that also does a lot of anime work. Mike Sinterniklaas, who voices Mikey, directs a lot of English anime dubs. I haven't seen the show yet, but it sounds rather amusing. Whether or not Kappa Mikey should be in the Encyclopedia is really borderline. Normally shows that are made 100% in America don't qualify, regardless of how hard they strive to look like anime (and Kappa Mikey doesn't strive to look like anime). However Kappa Mikey is about the anime industry (completely and utterly fictionalized mind you), and that might make it worth including. -t |
