More than a year ago I got the first DVD for Kanokon -- then after that it seemed like they gave up on the series. I figured the studio ran out of money or something.
Suddenly, here at CR, the suddenly posted the next 8 episodes after more than a year gap. Does anyone know the story behind that? I like romantic comedy ecchi, but Kanokon is just way too uneven. Parts of it are good but there are too few such parts. And the supporting characters were all more interesting than the lead characters. What put me off more than anything is the constant whiny sniveling of Kouta. The comedy is all about how Chizuru is constantly sexually harassing him, then Nozomou does it, they fight over him, and all the while Kouta cries and trembles and squirms and sometimes manages to run away. He takes all the worst traits of Shinji from EVA or Asahina from Haruhi and ends up making both of them look like they have a backbone in comparison. So you end up keep watching to see if something does happen or if he ever changes. The story builds up this or that crisis and somehow Kouta does SOMETHING other than whine and you think finally he's going to grow a pair and the story can move onto something different. But no, after the crisis he's still acting like being asked to have sex by pretty classmates is so absolutely horrible he can't even say he doesn't want to. Does anyone relate to such a crybaby? So I slogged through to the end. You may or may not want to, but just be prepared. |

Kanokon is a Media Blasters title. They stopped distributing it because they lost their partership with the company that printed their DVDs. All their ongoing titles' releases had to be halted. Then they struck a deal with somebody else and all those releases were finished including Kanokon though with that they went strait to a complete collection after volume 1. I would guess they thought the sales for it sucked. They also released an OVA or something too it looks like.

The series had some good parts, though also lots of bad, their OVA was awefull as it did not focus at all on the fun supernaturel themes, or good character interaction. I would say another series that wasted its good stuff by trying to be ecchi to get sales. *sigh*

Also for anyone interested in buying the complete series, good luck with that. I checked all my usual haunts and it's either on infinite backorder or delisted. Did MB discontinue it?

I ordered it from rightstuf. It had a backorder status for a little while but I eventually got it. Which was actually a bit strange because I ordered it on preorder before it was released. Which tells me their initial print run was tiny so only the earliest preorders got shipped on the release date and for everyone else it was print on demand. So technically, sales of it were much better than expected, they are just tired of having an excess supply of B titles.
As for the show itself, I love it. It's ecchi and super moe, has lolis, just the right amount of angsty romance which is what I'm looking for. Actually the biggest reason I got it was because CR was only streaming 3 episodes. I watched it and was, like this show rocks. Need MOAR now! Ordered it that same night. True story. |

Hah, I had the complete opposite reaction. Kouta was what made the series watchable for me. Generally I don't like tease shows (e.g. most "harem" shows) with a male protagonist who seems allergic to women, and a plethora of "Will they have sex this time? Nope, of course not."* scenes, but Kouta being a timid boyish shouta type was different from typical male leads, and his various embarrassed and frightened reactions to Chizuru were cute. This kind of schadenfreude-moe strikes me as somewhat similar to Koe de Oshigoto! but with a "girlish" boy instead of an actual girl. I didn't like it enough to buy the TV series, but I did go ahead and buy the OVA. (*This genre of "come close to sex but stop right at the line" is called "sundome," and Kanokon is specifically promoted as the "ultimate sundome novel series," so I wouldn't complain about it being exactly what it's supposed to be, but I usually avoid those.) |

Kanokon is the worst show I own, and that's saying something. I picked up my copy from the Corner Store a couple of months ago, and they still have copies for sale. It was on their best sellers list for a while too, so I guess it's popular (It must have been, if the OVA was licensed). The artwork is terrible and the show is little more than softcore pron, but it is a enjoyably trashy series. I'm just surprised that MB gave it a dub.

Story time. When I was watching this series, my wife came in and sat down to discuss dinner. I turned to her and said, "This show's pretty pervy." Just a few seconds later, a character walks in, jumps on a table, and spreads her legs to expose her panties. My wife raised an eyebrow and said "And you bought this because?" I replied (honestly) with "I thought this series was about a fox god helping someone out." I had mistaken it for Our Home's Fox Deity. Lesson learned? Uh, yeah, read the descriptions before clicking the "Add to Cart" option. At any rate, I can honestly say I've seen the series, though only history will judge this event as a triumph (to a strong will) or a failure (loli furry pervert bastard). *crosses fingers for the former |

Well, she IS helping him one way or another. If a show features Ayako Kawasumi in ecchi voice I can ignore everything else. |

I rented the first disc back when my local Hastings was still open.
It closed down, and now it's a movie theater in the same style as Alamo Drafthouse. It was a fun show! Almost tempted to try to get it via Netflix (if they have it), since I have not seen it in the stores for sale. I always wondered if there is something in the water in anime, cause it seems that a lot of guys (in these kinds of shows) have some sort of alergy towards cute girls. |

I suspect a different kind of show, where instead of being allergic to chicks, the dudes were totally into getting laid, the result of a bunch of chicks throwing themselves at the dude would end a) quite quickly, and b) in a manner that could not be shown on TV. For all its flaws, School Days skewered this particular issue quite amusingly.
As for Kanokon, as much as I typically like pervy comedies, my response to a show about sexual advances on a kid who lacked the maturity to make decisions was "Wow, this is as funny as statutory rape." Does it get any more tolerable? |

I haven't watched any of the show since last year when CR showed the first few but wasn't the kid just unnaturally young looking as opposed to actually a little kid? A first-year High-schooler being pursued by "second-years" (ignoring their godly ages).
Of course the defense of a show featuring a fake shota is as flimsy as a show that features a loli who is "really" an adult (a fauxli? fauxlita?). But it is there. |

Nah, not specifically. There's long-running harem comics where the protagonist sleeps with everybody (e.g. Charlie Nishinaka's "Cheers!"), and plenty of light novels (Kill Time Communication titles, etc.) like that, also. Not to mention eroge, of course.
Apparently they can if they want to. (Yosuga no Sora, School Days)
That's pretty much the theme. You're unlikely to like the rest of it any more. (And you should probably avoid Koe de Oshigoto! as well. )
Either you find it cute/amusing/entertainingly shocking/whatever or you don't. No need for excuses or "defense." |

It's been a while, but I seem to recall his maturity level clocking in quite a few years behind, not just in appearance, but in behavior. If they weren't trying to give the impression of "little kid, but for a technicality," they certainly had me fooled.
The show doesn't really need a defense, though. It just wasn't for me. I think it was the first show that came out that season, though, which made for a pretty funny ANN preview guide for the first few days. Edit: I see the point that it doesn't need a defense was already made. I actually caught Koe de Oshigoto and found it humorous enough. Remove the whiny, spineless male lead from a show, and I'll enjoy just about anything in the pervy genre. |
