I’ve never even heard of Hiwou War, that’s an impressively deep cut.

OK regarding Crunchyroll getting Hiwou War Chronicles, that's the first time we're getting what I assume is a kid anime from early 2001, is this anime OK for young kids with good reading skill for them to watch, any objectionable contents?

This isn't the first time the show has been available in english just for english streaming, as it was released on dvd back in the day. While I haven't watched the entirety of the show yet it seems mostly age appropriate, but its content tone and narrative wise lean more towards older kids than younger, since it has a big focus on history as well as the emotional struggles of the cast which may be a bit to complex for younger kids especially through subs only.

Yeah, I looked around and went to blu-ray.com and found the old DVDs that was issued by Bandai Entertainment back in 2006 just about the time I became a new fan. And you're right, according to the back of the DVD box, it said 13+ and up meaning this isn't a 3rd grade level friendly level stuff for any young kids to watch.

I wonder why Hiwou War doesn't include its English dub...?
Personally I think that brief era where Bandai and Geneon were using Odex to dub a few shows was pretty interesting (I say with a bias since that was basically my era, lol), and we really only got that talent pool under director Paul Pistore for a handful of shows.

Hiwou is more of a "family program" than purely a "kids' show", because it does delve rather heavily into actual Japanese history, including some deaths (not a lot, though), and for non-Japanese viewers it'll definitely be tough for some kids below 10 to keep up with all of the themes of Japan's recent (at the time of the story) coming out of self-imposed isolationism (i.e. sakoku) & the like.

I mean, young kids can still enjoy the adventure & action aspects just fine, & the show can be enjoyed in that regard, but the all of the references to stuff like shishi (not to be confused with the character actually named Shishi in the show), the origins of the jyoui movement, & the various history lessons taught at the start of each episode will likely go over their heads. Bandai giving it a 13+ rating wasn't completely unwarranted.

I got chance to look at Bones Studio's Wikipedia entry, and yes, this is their first anime show they worked on. Nice to know we got a piece of anime history right here. Would be nice if Crunchyroll can have a physical release given that they just license-rescue this anime given the significance of this anime.
