Episode 1
Broke my self-imposed rule not to sample any show that has the word "Villainess" in the title and had a decent time. Probably a future drop but willing to watch more. |

While the scenario is a bog standard Bakarina otome game villainess story, the Oji-san elements are quite enjoyable. Being a comedy but not a multiple character comedy, it will entirely be carried on the strength of the main characters comic timing. It has managed to be pleasant so far, but its yet to see if it can be dramatic or funny. None of the side characters have yet to distinguish themselves.
So far outside of the Oji-san interest, it is firmly in the shadow of My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Will it be able to prove itself? |

This one's a lot better than it had any need to be. I went into it expecting it to be the first show I'd drop as it says it's both an isekai and a video game setting but it doesn't feel like that's what is happening.
Grace hit her head and suddenly she's someone else. In another place and time, Kenzaburo gets hit by a truck saving someone. I'm not saying Grace is going to start interacting with Kenzaburo's daughter in his body but it's not out of the realm of possibilities. What I can say is happening is that Kenzaburo has entered an otome game world and has opened up the Grace route. Every time Anne flashes, she gets more attracted to Grace so in that it's still the game. OK... who's playing the game then? |

^^ Interesting suppositions there and it does seem odd that the personalities of Grace and Tondabayashi-san would be so different just because there weren't old memories to condition behavior and that the isekai is an exact duplicate of an otome game he saw his daughter play. For now at least I'm digging that in this show there is a teen daughter with an actual dad and mom that aren't embarrassments or treated as non-existent but appreciated as family members. Also appreciating the ED which seems to show that Tondabayashi-san has an internal persona which is wildly different from his dull "work/social" persona and his wife and daughter love that side of him. As a father that just cosplayed a Jinxer at an Arcane meetup with my grown daughter, I relate (and I suspect many others do too)...

I love that Kenzaburou is also a full-fledged otaku. It just makes his experiences in the game that more meta. It's also funny how all the male candidates had their affinities increase when he messed up at being mean. At some point, I think everybody will end up falling for Grace. The parody in this show is really entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. This is probably the 2nd or 3rd ever villianess show I've tried watching, so I didn't have super high expectations. But the fact that it's poking so much fun at itself is a nice surprise. The high production value and catchy OP and ED help a lot, too.

While some will key on the plot similarities to My Next Life as a Villainess the distinguisher and what I appreciate is Tondabayashi-san is trying to be the villainess but his loving fatherly nature gets in the way. And now Ep2 we see Grace's true nature may not be so villainous as well, so I wonder if the writer will do something with that? So many possibilities, good writing and production, this has "hooked" me good! BTW, this is the first "villainess" anime I am watching and I wouldn't have given it a second thought if it wasn't for Tondabayashi-san and how he is handled (ie. the humor).

Episode 2
I gotta say I find this pretty charming. Not sure how long I can go without the central conceit becoming repetitively annoying but I'm giving this the 3-episode treatment for sure. |

Charming is the perfect word for it. Kenzaburou being unable to shake the ingrained habits of a lifetime even when he's trying remains funny for now. And the opening scene with his daughter was very cute. They're nailing his "Dad energy". Him triggering the entire student council's relationship meters in one go was of course fairly predictable but still landed. (Longhair-kun's meter going up after a moment of dead air being perhaps the best bit) In the running for best show of the season? Of course not. However it's a very solid performer so far. |

Oh yes, I forgot to comment on the irony that "Grace" may end up messing up Anna's routes with the Student Council hunks... just not in the villainess way expected of her.

Also "We need a writing system with a long history that's super hard to learn? Let's use kanji!!" Was a solid joke too.

The only reason I decided to check this show out is because I saw Kenzaburou was being played Kazuhiko Inoue. His role as Kakashi from Naruto was one of the things I always loved in my formative years, and I haven't heard him in a whole lot of roles since then. I think he's pretty great in this, and I can't stop thinking if Kakashi were an otaku dad in the modern world who was reincarnated as a villainess in an otome game, this is exactly how he would act. If he ends up makes some off-beat reference to a teacher in a ninja franchise or something, I might just lose it.
