We sure are feasting on mystery this season. Ameku MD is there for the medical mysteries, Maomao is returning for all kinds of conundrums and with Tasokara Hotel we have sleuthing to find out people's fate in whether they are still alive or not.
I liked the first episode of Hotel. Neko is a fun mc with a strong desire to investigate and given the setting there is a lot to solve. There is the hotel with plenty of rooms/doors being unclear as to what they are for and how it seems to be a living entity that can change. Then there is helping people to find out their fate (I assume one new case each week or so) and the hotel staff being mostly not human. There is also Neko herself being alive or not. Bring on the mystery. |

I read on an article that this anime was coming out on Youtube and Tubi on January 8, but it was on Youtube today, and Youtube wouldn't have a video that was backstabbing Youtube, right? Anyway, I watched it.
The atmosphere of Tasokare Hotel wasn't quite as eery and weird as I was hoping it would be...it felt like there was a little something off with such a strange place being rendered so generically? Not that there weren't weird things being drawn, like the lady with the card on her head and such, but they weren't being drawn weirdly. The animation and art style could be found on most standard isekai. But that said, I enjoyed this anime a lot. It's something different, and I love the idea of it. More specifically, I love the idea of combining mystery investigation with dream symbolism. My eyelids didn't droop and my hand didn't twitch toward the remote once. |

Episode 1
Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place... I liked that. I agree with Edjwald that I wish the art direction wasn't quite so generic but I assume that's because they are trying to make this show for five cents. Couldn't help being reminded of Death Parade, a show I adored. You can see why from ANN's Death Parade summary:
So far, TH seems to have a lighter and quirkier tone, but that doesn't mean things might not get dark at some point. Anyhoo, this one easily passes the, "would you care to try some more?" test. |

I have to admit that I did wonder what the show would be like if it took cues from the Rusty Lake series (video game series). Given that I am bad with horror this is better for me personally though.

So, not to rain on the parade that is the hopeful ending of the second episode but being buried alive under a large amount of dirt is not something most people survive. Neko was positive by saying that anything is possible as long as you are alive but I am not seeing how mr gambler is going to get himself out of the situation. Given him gambling like crazy and even stealing from his parents I do not feel particularly bad about it though.
Otherwise it seems like every episode will be a new case and a fun detail is that the OP is updated with the pre-memory regained head of every person's case. |

I noticed that OP trick too...I was thinking "Huh? That dude wasn't even on last week, how can he be a main character?"
Anyway, this is definitely a keeper unless it screws up in an epic fashion. The animation is still el cheapo, and the MC's voice sounds like someone with a throat cold sucked on a helium balloon. and the creeper vibe the MC has going while she harasses the cook is a little annoying, and Amazon Prime subtitles are as intrusive and butt ugly as ever...but all that said, I'm into this. It's an S-tier idea with a C level execution, and that comes out to B or B+ for me. |

Episode 2
I wonder when we will finally run into a guest who remembers they are dead? I'm with smurky on this one, I don't see how the gambler gets out of being buried by an earth mover but hey the world is a wacky place and weird things can happen, I guess. Continue to like. |

Now that sure was a surprising third episode and it is a welcome one since it means the show can be unpredictable. When mr Pansy head looked all sinister I thought that something was a bit off but I did not expect it to go that way. Given the detective items I had hoped that Masaki might stay on as a helpful ally and while he is indeed staying on he is not the kind of person you want around given that he was ready to kill.
Otherwise some interesting lore bits with hell being real, people not being able to stay at the hotel forever and not just the rooms being able to change, the outside view and weather can be altered too. |

Episode 3
I wonder if whomever titled this episode was aware of what "pansy" can mean in English? In any case, enjoying this but not super sold on it. I can kind of picture going episode by episode never quite knowing if I'll stick with it only to suddenly turn around and have watched the whole thing. Time will tell. |

I was curious as to whether Mr. Pansy really was unable to leave. Mr. Matchhead (Okay, maybe I should start learning the names) seemed to indicate that guests could try to resist and refuse to leave for a while anyhow. Matchhead wouldn't have warned them if there was an automatic function where resolved guests just faded away, or a giant cane came out of nowhere and pulled them offstage. There was that moment before Mr. Pansy returned where he looked off to the horizon contemplatively, then looked back at the hotel and got a creepy/sneaky look on his face.
Mr. Pansy is an interesting addition just in terms of the intellectual puzzle. He knows he's hellbound, but if he returns to earth he'll forget everything he knows and just return to his old ways, and it's not even clear if he could avoid his fate by changing his ways for purely calculating reasons anyhow. You know he's going to cause chaos, but if he can't kill anyone what does that entail? Still liking the show.. |
