It's a little hard to tell if this is going to be an action anime or if it's going to be the closest thing to a slice of life that I'm going to get this season. I like slow paced crafting type fantasies, as evidenced by my loyal viewing of Dahlia in Bloom last season even though the show got a lot of accusations of blandness, and this show has a pleasant vibe.

I also like Isekai (I always feel like I should be standing up in a room full of people chainsmoking and drinking burnt coffee while sitting in aluminum folding chairs when I say that) and this one doesn't seem too bad as they go. There are some signs of formulaic touches - the addled god who accidentally #$%@ed over the MC at the beginning for example, item boxes and appraisal skills and the like - but it didn't feel like I was watching a toy robot lurch across the screen like a lot of forgettable isekai whose names I've...mostly forgotten.

I've also had a little bit of a break from isekai the last two seasons, so I'm giving this one a chance (shocker I know).

So are we going to have a series set in 2 time lines? And it looks like one of our heroines in what I call the present time line is a villain or at least a shady person in the 1 year later time line?

And does the spider have a human form? I have a feeling that is going to happen.

Yeah, I dunno.

There must have been a point in sending him a year prior, and he hasn't done anything significant enough to merit that yet...so....I think...either they will continue to show flash forwards, or they just won't refer to the other three summoned for a good long while. But I wouldn't put my money on the show jumping the MC forward to catch up in the next two episodes.

It could be a cool or brain twisting development if handled properly.

As far as first episodes go for an isekai that was a fair bit above average. Yeah, there are plenty of cliches like mentioned by Edjwald but it has solid animation plus a fair bit of charm. It does not feel like another mindless one of those. It is actually fun to see Takumi go wild with his crafting/alchemy and the villagers we saw actually felt like characters instead of cardboard figures.

Then there is the whole plot surrounding Takumi being sent a year in the past before the other heroes arrive plus one of said heroes actually having a working brain and not buying into the save the world spiel.

A solid start.

I think the red haired girl might be the human form of the spider. Except for one part in the ED, I don't see them in the same place at the same time. I could be wrong, but I just know the spider who can talk, we know is a girl, is going to be part of this harem.

@zfunk. Well, if that's true and I like her half as much as I liked Mio over in Tsukimichi Moonlit Fantasy, it'll all be good. Although the sweet voice makes it seem like she would have a much different personality.

Hmm, completely normal setup just without the main character being suppressed by people looking down on him and then blowing them up. Replacing that with a boppy silly feel to the show. Inoffensive fluff for the first episode. But for me it was hard to watch all of the first episode just because of how twee it all felt as he lovingly got a bunch of levels doing nothing at all but going I want that. If he spent more effort crafting and learning it would add so much to the experience, with only the forging of 1 blade feeling like any thought went into doing it.

Avoiding the whole entrenched nobles vs young upstart thing was probably a good call. Though I am sure some conflict will be incoming both from the empress summoner and whoever cut off the ears of that elf at the end.

I noticed that too, though I was more curious than annoyed. Does he automatically improve at everything just by repetitive practice? And I don't mean the way everyone improves a little bit with practice...if, for example, he was one of those people who are tone deaf but like singing, and he went around singing to himself, would he start getting level 1, level 2, level 3 signs until he was pitch perfect?

What a crazy great player world that would be.

Yeah, I dunno. I like the slice of life feeling cos, as I've mentioned before, slice of life is a little light this season. The anime is fairly well made too, On the other hand, this MC is the craftsman version of OP. It would be cool if he could raise earthen walls, for example, but he can create block walls that look like they have white concrete lines sealing them. Forget philosopher's stones and great pursuits of alchemy, this guy is already creating gold (and other metal) bars practically out of the atmosphere. He made a toilet with a magical mechanism by waving his hands for about 30 seconds and naming different spells.

Plus, he has a spider that shoots expensive spider silk out of it @$$ by the bale.

And now they're going to start bringing in slaves. And somehow, I'm thinking it's going to start with one beautiful, remarkably well adjusted female slave who's going to be eternally grateful for his kindness, and then somehow things will keep expanding from there.

I liked Farming Life on Another World (and I'm deeply, deeply ashamed of myself for it) which also had a lot of things falling the MC's way and a pretty OP farming tool, but at least the anime proceeded methodically and had a lot of info and slice of life moments on the way. This is more like the MC and his magic poof machine.

So headed into week 3 closer to dropping than I was in week 2.

I was going to say that it is hard to hate the show with its carefree attitude, even while it is completely not special outside of a potential interesting adversary. But then Slave trading came up. Depending on how it addresses the matter it would immediately then belong in the objectionable content category.

And you are right Edjwald, the character just snaps his fingers and conjures everything without effort. There is absolutely no stakes to the story writing, or character earning / making their way through the world. Which means no tension, no care for the character, and no expectations. Its carried entirely on silly whimsy and nothing else.

The third episode surprised me in several ways. First up is the issue of slavery and while the very concept of it is iffy Alchemist atleast has a relatively clean version of it. That along with Takumi treating his slaves well and healing Sofia makes me not consider it a reason to drop the show. I could do with the slavery cliche going away though.

Otherwise the events in the future have in fact not been forgotten though the flash forward did not really add anything new with the empire still being sus and planning something. Also, given the introduction of Maria it seems like the spider is staying a spider.

Given that the tutorial stage is now over we may see some challenges coming up.

It's true that the slaves in this episode are more like bond servants who, if I'm understanding the term correctly, were people who were servants without wages until they paid off a debt.

But yeah, I also wish the whole slave motif in the isekai genre would just wither up and die.

It very much approaches the topic of slavery like the old ironic slave owner statement "I believe slave ownership is not a bad thing! Why my slaves have very good lives, their conditions are almost human!"

The fact remains that they are still enslaved, in this case so forcefully they are magically compelled to not be able to resist their owner. This isnt like hiring a butler or maids.

@Cryten Perhaps I misunderstood, but it sounded like the "owner" was also magically bound by the contract. The owner had to provide food and shelter and wasn't allowed to transgress the terms that the "slave" agreed to. A cook couldn't be told to strip and and go wait in the bedroom for example.

But your point that it's still slavery and a BS way to make it sound acceptable is taken whether I'm right or wrong about that.
