I have never understood why anyone would want to forget positive experiences, or that the how and when of those experiences didn't have a huge impact on how they were shaped.
The only way I could possibly see that being a benefit is if the initial experience was diminished by being too early and it's not yet too late. Like, sure, I enjoyed Breath of the Wild when I played it, but what could have been foundational had I played it when I was young was just "a game" and I can't imagine anything fairing better. Well, I think I played Earthbound for the first time at the wrong stage in my life (late teens). Either sooner or later (when I eventually replayed it for the first time in my early 20s) would have been a better experience. ...I can't really think of a Playstation title where I'd say the same thing, though, and the older I get, the easier it is to come to terms that I have already had the most impactful moments in my life and that is increasingly unlikely to change. I also definitely wouldn't trade the early-20s replay experience for playing Earthbound for the first time *now* either, in this post-Undertale and post-Omori world. Both of those were good, but also would have been better if I played them (much) earlier in my life. Even going super-recent, I think that having experienced Elden Ring at launch meant a whole lot more than it would if I started it for the first time now, due to how much cultural osmosis would have diminished the mystery of that world. |
