I used to see a lot of anime after the credits of that anime, thank the audience for watching. I think that's very important message. If I watched your every week for 11+ weeks, then you should be thanked for spending your precious time watching that anime, especially when we get seasons with 25+ simulcasting shows a season.

in my book, its a nice thing that automatically gives an Anime a +1 rating in my book."Banished former hero lives as he pleases" which turned a 6 out of 10 for me, to a 7 out of 10 because of the message.

As anime are wrapping up for the spring season I look for it and happen to catch one for. Maybe CR, HiDive, Amazon Prime, Disney, Hulu, etc. (and whomever else had exclusive anime this season) skip them and more anime are doing it, but it feels like I haven't seen one in 2+ years.

I think its not that they were really thanking the audience its that the production team decided to reward the audience by having guest artists do character illustrations for what's known as an end card. It was just customary to include a message such as "thank you for watching" or they sometimes had more personalized messages. Many artists who weren't involved in the show's production are included in the credits in ANN's Encyclopedia just for doing these end cards.

It was really more of a one-off thing that had more popularity in the late 90's to early 10's. As production costs rose and overall demand for anime increased, bonus promotional things like this fell out of usage.

One of my favorite series of end cards featured in every episode with a different illustrator was Oreimo including one by Akio Watanabe who has a long history of doing end cards for many shows.
