I had this anime pegged for a one stop and drop, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Maybe it was because the grandparents creating this absurd situation were so unreservedly twisted and crazy and fun that it kept me from trying to apply any cold scrutiny. Or maybe it's because the voice actress is talented and took what could be some annoying screeching and made the lines funny, kind of like the voice actress who plays Aqua on Konosuba. Or maybe it was because the show had a fast pace and didn't spend a lot of time dwelling on the obvious.

Whatever, I had fun. I was a little surprised that the couple really did get married. At least on shows like Nisekoi and a Couple of Cuckoos the leads were only affianced, but this show took the plunge twenty or so minutes in.

Episode 1

I wasn't planning to give this one a whirl but after reading Edjwald's comments above I decided oh what the hay. I chortled, I guffawed, I snickered. I can't say I'll be in for the full ride, but willing to check out some more. And NO, it's not just to see Akane in her succubus form, geez. By the way, how are they married if there hasn't even been a ceremony yet? It's not like a show like this to skimp on the realistic details...

Akane in her succubus form alone makes the show worth watching - her looks are kawaii even if her personality is not. Wink

I thought it was not uncommon in Japan to get married by filling out paperwork and having the ceremony later?

In Japan, just signing the marriage registration is all that is required for a couple to be married. The ceremony is completely unnecessary and has no legal bearing on the marriage.

I would have liked an anime solely about the grandparents if I am honest, those two sure make for some lively moments. The mc's make for lively moments too but that is mostly due to Akane having the temper of a Tasmanian Devil. I assume that she will mellow out over time and we do not get that many tsunderes anymore (less than in the past anyway). Anyway, the banter/arguing is amusing enough.

Add the solid animation and you have a goodish start to a probably chaoticly fun show.

@Edjwald to not remind me of Nisekoi please, I still have very mixed feelings on how that ended.

@Smurky Nisekoi ended? Are you referring to the Manga or Light novels or whatever, or was there an obscure movie release that I missed?

Anyway, the problem with harem comedies is that they can be a lot of fun with shenanigans and pissing contests and such, and poor shlubs everywhere can get a little vicarious wish fulfillment watching an MC who usually isn't all that have hot throbs falling all over them, but ending these stories as a comedy is a bitch.

How do you create tension by having at least two, often three or four, viable romantic candidates with their own supporters, and then stay funny and upbeat while breaking some hearts? Harem comedies often go sour as they near the final stages. Haganai is the ultimate example for me. I loved season 1, but season 2 was angst for the memories. Loved Saekano - How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend season 1, but season 2 was a buzzkill. Thought Baka and Test was funny, but the later, multiple episodes dealing with Shimada's suffering weren't fun.

Maybe that's why a lot of harem comedy anime take the coward's way out and end on one season with a sense of closure, indicating who the MC is going to end up with but not really crystallizing the relationship before the poop hits the industrial turbine. Bento! would be a good example of making that approach work.

It's one reason why I like Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines. It was sort of refreshing seeing a "Life goes on" kind of approach from the other side. Even if Makeine is setting up another potential romantic traffic jam (and maybe it isn't?), it's core message is that most people have multiple break ups and failed crushes and such in their life, good and bad moments, and that's not a cause for despair.

@Edjwald I am referring to the manga. The ending of that fits with your point that at some point most harem comedy shows turn sour since progression needs to be made. In the case of Nisekoi that meant several rejections that almost felt a bit spiteful in nature. Given how many bad endings there are in the genre I have grown to like actual harem endings or ''choose from several endings'' more.

The problem with the rejections to potential girlfriends from a harem series is that the main character at the heart of it is effectively dishonest in leading on a bunch of females for most of the run time. I think thats why some semi-harem shows have a clear winner early in the piece like Ah My Goddess! and Love Hina. It effectively turns the other harem mates of a show into day dreams.

Still unless the show revels in debauchery of the cute or sexy kinds, I find full harem endings either delusional or disturbing. As it is hard to separate it from pure sexual desire to have all the eligible women, without actually looking after them. It is far better to have the girls of Kanon crying over realising they will not make any more progress then trying to attain the true School Days ending.

But wish fulfilment of desires for attention, sex and power will always sell well. Better works just make it easier to accept like the craziness of Eminence in Shadow.

Well, -100 points for the show not using Akane's succubus form (except in the ED, of course). This is another show I continue to be unsure of but will test the waters a little more. A definite candidate for dropping. I do enjoy Saito's flaky sister though.

I coasted right along still enjoying it just fine. I do think that If the two are going to be getting closer this fast, the show's going to need conflict from another source - I'd vote for more appearances and schemes by the grandparents personally. If the only other complication is the sweet blonde making her crush on the male lead more obvious, that could get bothersome.

Three episodes in and progress is being made at a pretty brisk pace. In those episodes the mc's have gone from not being able to be near the other person to having romantic moments and not freak out over every interaction. Most romcoms take a lot longer to get this far and I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing. It also seems like Himari finding out is only a matter of time and given her crush that will probably create some chaos.

Not loving this but not quite ready to pull the cord, either. I'll give it one more shot and if it is just another string of not particularly interesting incidents strung together, then I'll cut it lose. I do like Flaky Sister, though. She should get her own show.

Akane is still waifu bait in her normal form, and seems like good person underneath her prickly personality.
