How good or bad is opening at number #8?
Even if Knights of the Zodiac is a good or at least decent movie I wondered if it might not do well in Japan because of feelings of appropriation. Not strictly feelings of cultural appropriation but more along the lines of taking a property that people are fans of and trampling over the source material in the process of adapting it.
Fans of Saint Seiya outside of Japan might be more comfortable with some of the changes being made such as having a more diverse cast. Whereas Japanese fans might feel more territorial about things like Saori/Athena not being Japanese. English speaking fans of Saint Seiya who grew up with the dub would be familiar with Sienna/Athena and might not be as put out by the casting or character name choices.
Also the fact that Hollywood has a bad track record with live action adaptations of anime and manga could be off-putting for a lot of Japanese moviegoers.

8th is pretty low, and it's been beaten out by movies that have been out for weeks. (one of which made less than a million USD) So, financially speaking, not fantastic.
Reviews are pretty decent though, it's sitting at 3.2 on Yahoo! Japan's movie rating site, so it's above average. People who like it *really* like it while people who don't seem to be because it doesn't feel like the story of Saint Seiya.

To be fair the amount of live-action anime adaptions in general that do well, regardless whether they're made in Japan or overseas, is kind of rare. Notable exceptions to this are Death Note, Gantz, Gintama, Rurouni Kenshin, Dororo, and Attack on Titan, but for every one of those you get a ton that only make a few million like Bleach, Inuyashiki, Fullmetal Alchemist, JoJo,, Gyakuten Saiban, and Terraformars. Live-action adaptions making above 10 million at the box office in Japan are pretty rare. As far as western adaptions go, the only one I can think of that did well in Japan off the top of my head was Detective Pikachu.

The Saint Seiya live-action adaptation being a failure doesn't surprise me, the trailers didn't look good and not even in regions where the series is popular, like Latin America, is doing well, Mario is still doing great numbers there instead. There's a possibility that the movie will do okay in China where the series is also popular but more precisely it is where the movie's production company comes from.
On more positive news, the Super Mario Bros. Movie seems to doing great numbers for a foreign animated movie in Japan, if all of the info is correct, it already surpassed the record for best debut for an Illumination movie and also for any previous Universal Pictures movie in Japan.
