despite the layers of kink

I have seen this written about Nagatoro and even noted that the first season had a significant objectionable content warning on ANN. Sure, I guess, if the reference point is the Disney Channel. (I would say Nickelodeon, but that ignores that Ren & Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life). But anime, a medium that has had the likes of MM!, Mayo Chiki, To Love Ru Darkness, The Testament of Sister New Devil, Seikon No Qwaser, Freezing and Prison School? Even if you take away the R-rated stuff, that still leaves you with the likes of Mysterious Girlfriend X, Familiar of Zero (granted more so the source material), Konosuba (whether Darkness by herself OR everyone but Darkness) plus infamous titles like Dog & Scissors. Nagatoro had little that you wouldn't have seen in a harem series. Just take out all harem trope girls except slender tsundere - Taiga, Louise, Shana, Yukino - from the outset as that character winds up with the guy 9 times out of 10 anyway. Then take basically the same (honestly mild) sexy jokes and reframe them as teasing gimmicks instead of harem hijinks and slapstick.

Also, it was clear in the first season that Nagatoro was inexperienced with relationships, romance and intimacy. The sole indication otherwise was her teasing Senpai over being a virgin. Yes she was very skilled at dismantling guys she disdained. But nothing was said or shown about any of her prior boyfriends. Also, her reactions when her antics caused Senpai to accidentally see or touch something that Nagatoro didn't intend? Panic, terror and shame. Not the reactions of a high school girl used to interacting with. Also, how terrified she was over Senpai's interactions with other girls. Her sense of security was Senpai being a loner who couldn't form social relationships with girls other than her, meaning no romantic competition. Once she saw that this wasn't true she had a confidence crisis and tantrum meltdown. Not the sort used to "other girls are going to like my boyfriend for the same reasons that I do" thing.

Kind of a disappointment, really. More shonen romcoms where at least one of the characters - and ideally both - have dating and romantic experience are needed. Instead we have the likes of Uzaki-Chan Wants To Hang Out with adults in their 20s who have never gone on a single date.

Kind of wonder if I should give the show another shot sometime. It felt like something I'd like but then I watched the first episode and kind of just found it completely intolerable and everyone in it deeply unlikable.

Well, the characters do change/improve this season. That said, their core stays the same and many characters remain a bit over the top.

I've been enjoying the manga, but toward the end of the second season I'd gotten tired of the wheel-spinning in the anime. Probably because I can skim through that wheel-spinning in the manga easily, but have to sit through it in the anime.

The characters do progress --- though it felt like "Sempai" seemed to lose ground in the week between each episode.
