I still remember when 151 was a big deal. Parents were like, "how will the kids remember them all, or even catch them all?"
I stopped counting after 650?

"You can remember all that shit but you can't remember to do your homework?!" or any other kinds of school things like what's gonna be on a test and whatnot. Heard that way too many times in like the first 2-3 years of Pokemon. And I wasn't even bad at school at all (though I did forget to do my homework a lot but also screw homework).

Grew up with the 3rd generation, people kept saying "Why do you remember 300-something creatures but you can't remember the lesson at school?" It's pokemon, was my answer. Still, never thought we would get to 1008, the 1000 pokemon is....meh, in my opinion, could have been better. Anyways, imagine we get to 2000 of them, that might happen but it doesn't feel as an impossible task

The pokemon designs and seeing new pokemon get announced was the whole thing which kept/keeps me interested in the franchise. Pushing alolan forms/mega evolutions and other such gimmicks has lessened my interest in the franchise. If what counts as a pokemon you stick on the national pokedex means less and less then I care less and less. On top of the fact none of the recent gens release that many pokemon anyway.

Mega evolutions, regional variants and other gimmicks are not counted in the national dex. Even in this video, the number stopped going up when alolan mon were shown.

New pokemon that add to the dex count are fewer and further in between, but actual new pokemon designs have increased the total number of "new" pokemon quite a bit more than normal. Not to mention, they save a lot of new pokemon/designs for other main line games like the remakes and Legends. For instance, Gen 6 only had 72 "new" pokemon (half of most gens before it), but had 30 Mega evolutions in XY and later added 18 more in ORAS, plus 2 primal legends, bringing the total to 122, making it about average. By the same logic, gen 7 had 104 (86 new, 18 Alolan), gen 8 had 147 (89 new, 19 Galarian, 32 Gigamax, 7 Hisuian), and gen 9 has 107 so far (103 new, 4 Paldean). Note that gen 6 and later largely avoided introducing new common evolutions of old pokemon to the mix, so megas and regional variants/evolutions/etc. replaced most of those. So no, they aren't cutting the number of new pokemon. They're just reclassifying the ones they do make.
