I thought the way they animated Kitagawa's breasts in the second episode when she was laying on Gojo's bed especially well done.
The fact that they realistically animated the lateral movement when she was lying on her side was impressive. I cant think of any other anime that has chosen to add that level of realism to that particular area before, Fanservice or otherwise.

Kitagawa comes close to being a manic pixie dream girl but I think avoids it by having a central interest that drives her mania. I liked the first episode enough to try the manga, which looks like it's turning into something of a harem with somewhat oblivious Gojo at the center, but is rescued by being a series which does to cosplay what Moyashimon did to fermentation.
Kitagawa and Gojo are both learning what it takes to do good cosplay. Gojo, especially, does research to see how he can improve his cosplay designs and support Kitagawa's cosplay presentation.
I'm not into cosplay, but the details are fascinating! I hope the anime dwells on those details too.

I get what they were trying to do in episode 2... but it could have been done in 2 minutes, we didn't need 15 minutes of Gojo being queasy. Beside the usual problem of fan service heavy sequence "why would I need just watch actual porn?", I was just pretty bored throughout since it was just the same things over and over again. Also... why did she make a big deal about her being in a string bikini compared to underwear, they show way more skin than underwear... At that point just make her a naturalist
More about cosplay, less fan service going forward please.

So about the fanservice....thats probably not going to go away. I think people coming into the show need to know that Marin is very much an eroge cosplayer. Her dressing up in very revealing clothes is going to be a very big part of the story. I am curious to see how they handle the technical side of the story. The technical details on how they pull off the cosplay is another big part of the story but I can see incorporating some of that stuff might get difficult.

As someone who assisted with the English version of the manga, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE for me to fully explain how excited I am about this. I will agree that the series has a weird fun line that it plays between being fanservice and being ABOUT fanservice - sometimes it feels intentional and sometimes it doesn't.
But also, as someone who's been cosplaying for over a decade, this series just feels like a love letter to cosplay and fan culture. The joy of 'OH HOLY COW SOMEONE ACTUALLY WANT TO TAKE MY PICTURE!!!,' the accidentally meeting someone who you've followed online and practically worship, the going into a wig shop with no clue what you're really doing, and often figuring out what you're doing wrong via screwing things up (sometimes with Double-D-Disastrous consequences).
I'm SUPER excited about this getting an anime adaption (yen press has been on FIRE lately with its works getting adaptations) and just keep my fingers crossed that the studio manages to keep the quality up for the whole run.

I don't mind the fanservice. I'd just rather it not sideline actual substance for 20 minutes straight. Episode 2 was a real snooze.

What is not substantive about episode 2? The kind of stuff it depicted (establishing Gojo's initial discomfort and having to try to overcome physical closeness to do the basics of taking measurements) is crucial for a show about cosplay and making clothing for someone.

Having read all the published volumes of the manga, you'll be happy to learn that things will calm down a tad with the fanservice, but don't expect it to go away entirely. Yes, the cosplay aspect of this series will be the main focus and it can get downright intensely technical, almost like a manual, but it's also a rom com with a smattering of wholesome-like ecchiness here and there. It's sexy without the sex.

Bikinis are made to be seen. Underwear isn't. That's the difference. The amount of skin shown is secondary to the intent of the garment. Note how a lot of "sexy" lingerie covers more than a plain old bra and panties!
Anyway, I feel a bit like I'm in bizarro world because I, a person who often finds fan service alienating, loved the episode and thought it was adorable.

Sure -- the episode wasn't completely plot-irrelevant; it's not like they just had a random beach episode or something. But it was incredibly repetitive, for an issue easily conveyed in a few minutes, especially for as deeply set a genre staple as "Shy guy freaks out being physically close to girl in ostensibly non-romantic situation". Substance becomes pretty insubstantial if you stretch it thinly over enough minutes, in my opinion.

What made me most uncomfortable about episode 2 was that Kitagawa didn’t recognize Gojo’s discomfort at all. He was so obviously uncomfortable and she was so incredibly oblivious. It made her seem like even more of a manic pixie dream girl, or that she was just treating him like a servant, rather than a kid her age.

Did we really need 15 minute to learn that Gojo is uncomfortable with seeing someone almost naked? If someone were to skip this episode, would they assume Gojo would be just fine seeing her naked? Even if you keep the same format, they could have done so much more. There was almost no explanation of how to take measurements. Nor were there any inclusion of Gojo doll hobby.
This entire episode could have been replaced by the word "Gojo is uncomfortable with seeing a near naked person" followed by a link to hentai and it would have been just as informative and more satisfying.

The degree to which Gojo is comfortable with Marin being naked vs the degree to which Marin feels uncomfortable being around Gojo naked is plot relevant and changes with time. Also a little detailed that was mentioned but not delved into yet but Marine is a professional model so she's pretty comfortable being in revealing clothing. I also want to reiterate that there will be alot of this. The show is regularly about Marin transforming from wearing nothing into being fully costumed up and how to transform her body type into something else, so seeing her in various states of undress will be common.

It's not repetitive at all, the distinct steps Gojo takes throughout the episode (and how he moves form one to the next) are incredibly clear. And yes, it's easy to fit things into "genre staples" if you completely ignore any surrounding context, like the importance the show is not only placing on physical expression and distance, but emotional expressiveness (how open one is to their passions and what they do with it). Not to mention, their interactions with one another (and Marin expressing discomfort very briefly) establishes a clear bedrock for their character dynamics and future interactions with one another. All stuff that sounds worth spending an episode on, considering that's all foundational stuff.
Bunch of people here seem to turn their brains off when fanservice is involved, which says more about them than about how meaningful the fanservice is.

As someone who enjoys surprise BDSM elements in their Japanese anime, I am forever sad at the Slippery Girls series isn't a real piece of media.
On the topic of Gojo being uncomfortable around Marin, yes, I agree that his reactions skewed so much to the exaggerated side that it was almost cringe-worthy, but considering the importance of the whole measurement-taking step to the whole process behind this first cosplay, and the character studies the show appears to be giving just as much importance as the fanservice, I wouldn't call it a complete waste of time. Plus it made moves to keep things interesting, like one portion of Gojo's worries being dedicated less to Marin's on-display body and more about said body sitting on his unwashed futon, and the one time he did contact-touch her, he didn't even notice, which combined with Marin's embarrassment about where the touch was made for a decent punchline for the whole segment.
