Based on history, is this good or bad for a Kirby game?

Really damn good, if you ask me!

It's like how most of Nintendo's 1st party offerings break their respective past records from other systems (well, except Tokyo Mirage Sessions for obvious reasons).

Yeah, games like Mario Kart 8 DX, Smash Ultimate, Metroid Dread, Animal Crossing: NH and Pokémon Sw/Sh have sold more on Switch than previous games did in past Nintendo systems (in the case of Pokémon it's the second best selling since the original Red/Green/Blue/Yellow).
In my opinion Tokyo Mirage Sessions didn't have a lot of appeal, neither for Fire Emblem nor Shin Megami Tensei fans, it was kind of tough sell. The changes that were done for the localization did not help as well.

What localization changes were there that hurt TMS?

I’m curious about this too since I have heard the game sold better outside of Japan where it bombed even in spite of those changes that were made in the localization.

I think the big one was the removal of swimsuit costumes for the playable characters, which directly affected the storyline of a specific dungeon. Whereas in Persona where dungeons are sort of like physical manifestations of complex emotional themes (or so I've heard), the dungeons in TMS reflect on some sort of personal struggle a party member has to get over in terms of making it into their entertainment field. For the second dungeon (I believe) the theme involved a character having to get over their nervousness with Gravure (bikini) modelling. Since all the swimsuits were swapped out with street wear costumes, it drastically undercut the underlying theme of the dungeon (like she instead just had to get over her nervousness about modeling in general, even though she was fine with that until the this part of the story, which comes off as odd).

Otherwise they just made some odd/bad censorship decisions, such as adding smoke over a boss' cleavage, but for cutscenes only & was uncensored during the fight itself. Or censoring a wedding dress costume that wasn't particularly risque at all (it certainly wouldn't have threatened an M rating), by painting the character's legs & cleavage white in such a way that made it look like she was wearing a full white bodysuit under the wedding dress.

When it was learned that the Japanese Switch release was going to inherit all the edits made for the western Wii U release, they had so many angry responses that the company issued an apology for not making it clearer sooner (and caused sales of the Wii U version to briefly spike up in the country).
