For a long time now,I've been hanging around YouTube. Yeah,I know. I'm kinda pathetic for doing that. Well recently,I'd discovered something very interesting there. Something that I thought I'd wanna let everyone know about. Someone there was uploading full episodes of the old DIC "Sailor Moon" dub. I have to admit,I kinda liked seeing it again. I thought it was great. It would be interesting for those who weren't around when it first appeared or for those who didn't see it the first time.
Oh yes. I'm quite familiar with the complaints about this version of "Sailor Moon." But,for me,I have a different view of it. Yes,a lot of the dialogue is a bit corny, but it was also done with a lot of passion. I've heard some complaints about Viz's dub. That while it's more faithful to the original version in Japan, there doesn't seem to be as much passion in the newer version than there was in the old version.

A lot of the complaints seem to revolve around the dialogue as I've mentioned above. While I agree it could get a little corny,it wasn't all that bad. In fact, there were times when it could be pretty memorable. A hilarious example of this came when Serena (Usagi) wanted to tell her friend Molly (Naru) that someone she was having a crush on might get her into trouble. She was with her cat Luna but she was having a hard time figuring out how to tell her. Finally,Luna said in what was probably the best and possibly funniest line of the whole dub. She exasperatedly said to herself "Why do I even bother to try?!" And,the way Luna's original English voice actress said it made me laugh a lot. It still does whenever I think about it.
Another more infamous version of this took place in the "Snow White" episode. There was a scene in which the girls were fighting over who would play Snow White. They were all arguing over who would do it. Lita (Makoto) would probably say the most infamous line in the whole dub. She said that she should play Snow White because she had the most talent. Well,in the original Japanese and Viz's version,it was something else entirely. Now,you can insert your own Lita talent joke anywhere. A lot of people have done that already so I don't mind but they don't get why this was done.

The main reason why this was done was because this version of "Sailor Moon" was being done for a younger audience in mind. Most kids might not understand that type of joke and their parents certainly wouldn't like that sort of humor in what was supposed to be a kid's show. So,that was the main reason for all the edits and dialogue changes and other things like that. To make it more palatable for kids and their parents to watch.
Now,if you're younger and are watching this version for the first time, you're probably going to ask "Did teenagers at the time really talk like they did in the show?" Well,I can say I was in my late teens when this version of "Sailor Moon" first came out and I can say that no they didn't. They didn't use words like "hunkmeister" or other stuff like that. I didn't know anyone at my high school who said stuff like that. That was something the writers at DIC thought up. One of the characters did mention Joey Lawrence once, but he was a big heartthrob at the time,so no surprise there.

Here was something I didn't know until just recently. I didn't know that they'd brought in Stan Bush to sing a song for one of the episodes. When I originally watched it,I just thought they brought in some talented unknown to sing it. There were plenty of unknown people who were brought in to sing for certain episodes but I had no idea that the people at DIC brought in Stan Bush. The guy who'd sung "The Touch" in the original animated "Transformers" movie of the 1980's also did this.
And,I wouldn't learn about that until years later. I'd gotten a 2018 book called "Anime Impact" by Chris Stuckmann. In the section on "Sailor Moon,"one of the authors of the piece,Joshua Dunbar, mentions this. Upon finding out about this,I went online to find out more. Both IMDB and Anime News Network confirmed this. I was shocked. I had no idea about this. I certainly didn't know about this.

So,I'll bet you're wondering what happened. Well, when I tried to watch another episode of this,I found out that YouTube got rid of the channel for some reason. It's kinda sad to me. I'd have loved to have seen a lot more episodes and I hope someone else does this. I hope that one day, people will have a chance to see the original "Sailor Moon" dub and enjoy it like I and others did. I hope that happens because it doesn't deserve to disappear into obscurity. It deserves better than that.
