Always good to get a reminder like this that it's a mistake to think famous people are better than the rest of us at everything. They are only better than the rest of us at *one* thing, in Tomino's case conceptualizing Gundam 35 years ago, and the balance is just normal opinions that vary from meh to bad.

Seriously? He's criticizing certain anime for not catering to the lowest common denominator? Uhhh...no. I think the lack of pervert pandering and overdone sexual situations is a good thing. One doesn't need to beat the same dead horse pervert tropes over and over again in order to be good.

I'm not sure where Tomino gets that KyonAni never has anything sexual in their shows. Like their earliest titles were based on adult visual novels, Haruhi Suzumiya has plenty of fanservice humor in it, and the entire Free franchise is made to appeal to horny fujoshi. Then you also had stuff like Myriad Colors Phantom World and even FMP I remember it having fanservice humor in it.

I wonder how the phrasing of the title would work better, maybe just totally eliminate kyoto animation from it, since his critique is just directed at shinkai. I just wanted to comment that kyoani's works do not lack sex but it was pointless because he was only talking about shinkai's works when talking about that.

I wish he was always like this and never apologized to otaku or said overly insecure self-denigrating things. Admitting Garzey's Wing wasn't good is one thing but the guy is a freaking legend who's been in the industry since Astro Boy - his experience and the experience of other Mushi Pro alumni doesn't make them old fashioned, it's valuable these days.
He's right. The "purity" in anime can be far weirder than if characters just screwed - especially in shows obviously made for adults that try to maintain a weird feeling of youthful innocence.
The headline is misleading because the sex comment was not about Kyoani.

TBH it feels rather crass for Tomino to be calling out KyonAni over something petty like this after what they've been through. And if anything modern anime is far more sexualized and pervy than anything that's ever been in Gundam.

He's not talking about fanservice. He means that these romance titles always stop at hand holding or a kiss, they never show the relationship get to the point of sex. It's something I've seen fans criticize all the time, how shows will end when the leads start dating but never explores what happens beyond that.

He was asked about it and, yet again, the headline misinforms people by implying he accused Kyoani of not being sexual enough.
And yeah anime is pervy but it's not super common for the characters to outright have sex in the big super mainstream shows that people don't watch for purposes of arousal. Maybe in certain softcore porn stuff like Valkyrie Drive, but even then a lot of ecchi anime dances around it.

A lot of this is due to the tightening of Japan's censorship laws and the death of the OVA market that allowed for more gratuitous anime to be made. Tomino should maybe direct his ire towards Japanese regulators and politicians over anime studios and directors. But there's nothing wrong with different directors having different tastes in what kind of anime they want to make and Shinkai clearly wants to make more family friendly content a la Miyazaki.

It is bad timing to bring up criticism of Kyoto Animation though that is partly the responsibility of the person that was asking the interview questions. I suspect that Yoshiyuki Tomino hasn't seen Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid which has one of the horniest dragons in anime. As for his opinion on Makoto Shinkai movies I get what he meant since they are innocent romance movies but they are mostly made for teenage girls so he isn't the target demographic.

I mean, Clannad After Story is like one of the few anime I can think of where a typical anime high-school couple actually grows up and progresses their romance and have a kid. Not exactly the right studio to go after.
