I love this series. Smile

It is almost impossible to convey the passion of live music in a visual medium, yet Ninomiya-sensei somehow manages to make it happen, allowing the reader to experience the triumph and joy (and occasionally angst) of an emotional performance as if we were a member of the audience. I absolutely disagree with the notion that the art is 'too simple' -- the clean lines are well suited to the story she wishes to tell, and are are quite beautiful as well.

There is so much to admire about this series, and I don't think the fact that it isn't immediately attention grabbing should be held against it at all; if everything smacked you in the face like a shounen action or shoujo romance, you'd be pretty bruised and never want to read another manga again. I am very glad the reviewer acknowledged how wonderful and utterly captivating Nodame is, if only you would give it a chance. One can only hope if it is successful other titles will follow (like Honey and Clover) and manga companies will realize there is a market for josei series as well as shoujo for women. But that's not really the point, is it. I just really want more mature titles to read on my shelf. *G*

The point is, Nodame Cantabile is a fantastic series that lots of people would enjoy. And the dorama is terrific fun too. *grins*
Here's hoping the new anime gets licensed! With the ever-so-brillaint Seki Tomokazu as Chiaki, how could it not? Very Happy

I also love Nodame Cantabile. I've recently started reading it, and I'm currently at volume two. The characters are very wacky, especially Nodame, but it feels very mellow. I personally prefer josei manga over the other age/gender based genres, and this has to be the best josei I've read in awhile.

I guess that makes me Nodame Cantabile fangirl number three. I love the characters to death and the fact that I've played or studied a lot of the music they mention makes me love the entire series even more, but I only wish the bookstores around where I live would keep it in stock. I can usually count on WaldenBooks to have the latest volume in stock, but that's about it.

That is a lovely cover of a lovely manga. I agree with the review very much, except for the possibly boring art issue. The art is, to me, refreshing rather than simplistic. It's one female-focused manga that's not weighted down with bubbly backgrounds and layouts every time something gets touching.

And how can I say no to a main character like Nodame?

Huh....I must be in the minority then. I read these same two volumes, and I was bored more often than not. My big problem with the book is that none of the characters struck me as particularly likeable, which made me not really care much for the struggles they were going through. I read it a while ago under less than ideal conditions, though (during an overnight shift at work...what fun!) so maybe my opinion will change when I give it a re-read.

Definitely give it another try. Nodame Cantabile is one of the few josei titles being translated over here (while being marketed as a shoujo), and its one of the most enjoyable series as well. It has plenty of worthwhile comedic moments and has an inspiring attitude about it in a different yet somewhat similar way that Beck has.

This series is definetly for people who truly love classical music and/or can understand artistic temperament. And the great thing is, if you don't have one iota of interest in these fields then you wouldn't have picked it up in the first place.
I love the character development and the relationships they have with one another, I think the art is unique and beautiful.
Nodame is up there as one of my all time favorite manga because it truly is a slice of life dramatic series that focuses on the nutsy way one artistic couple get along. Even though they aren't a couple!

It's great! two thumbs up! You won't regret reading it if you're a fan of the josei genre!
