I took a gander at KIKU-TV's message boards, and I saw this:

Here's a different angle to why KIKU subscribes to dubbed anime instead of the "real thing."

It is a fact that licensing of Japanese entertainment direct from Japan is VERY expensive. My theory here is that licensing anime through FUNimation is cheaper than the original Japanese source.

To shed light on this, look at the DVD prices between region-1 and region-2. In Japan, each volume is 5000 yen. The same volume, sold through FUNimation, sells for half the price ($24.95 regular). Now you know why DVDs have region-protection on them; imagine all the Japanese buying up FUNimation DVDs because they're 50-percent cheaper than their domestic DVDs.

Now, if you all want KIKU to purchase licenses from the Japan source, they'll need to do the following:

1. Pay MUCH MUCH more.

2. Find advertisers ON THEIR OWN that'll cover the cost. Remember that the advertising in the FUNimation shows are provided by FUNimation. It is much like how CBS or NBC works... When you watch CSI, the national commericals come from CBS, and not KGMB.

3. Pay KIKU staff to sub the content, just like the Japanese dramas. Remember that the region-2 DVDs do not contain English subtitles. So KIKU will have to sub from scratch.

IMHO, there's just too much work involved in order to have Japanese audio and English subtitles. Back in the days of Kikaida and Robocon, advertisers were pouring in. Do you think Dr. Tenjoma will sponsor anime? People watching the anime aren't loosing their teeth.

Now I really don't understand the point of this post. Is this guy saying that If KIKU-TV got subtitled feeds from FUNimation Channel, it'll cost more, or that if they got "raw" Japanese Anime from Japan, it'll cost more?

And they apparently hate the new Crayon Shinchan dub

So wait, now more than nine people have the FUNimaton Channel?

Some Japanese people get it and I STILL don't.

Also, they don't like the Shin-chan dub because they don't understand that to be a man you must have honor. Honor and a penis.

Many of them already do; it's cost-effective to get a region-free DVD-player (or "make" one *shifty eyes*) and import R1s. This is why Japanese companies tend to make all kinds of rules and restrictions in the licensing agreement about episodes per disc and what extras can and can't go on the R1 DVDs. They sometimes go to the point of deliberately sabotaging the R1 video quality by giving NA companies sub-par masters *cough*Girls Bravo*cough*, all in the name of preventing "reverse importation." Sorry to be bitter, but when DVD-rips taken from R2 DVDs look considerably better than the legitimate R1 product, something has to be up.

Not surprising, since the Funi dub is almost a completely different show from the KIKU/JN Productions translation. The latter made Shin-chan into a kid-friendly show; not this "Action Bastard" stuff Funi made.
