I've tried to type em and en dashes in both the forum and the encyclopedia, but without result--they just disappear. Are they locked out of ANN specifically, or phpBB generally? (Though I have the same problem in vBulletin.) They are easy to include in macOS, and I find them very useful, as well as preferable to their typewriter substitutes (hyphen and double-hyphen).

No, I've just tried to use the Macintosh keyboard versions: Option-hyphen (en dash), and Option-underscore (shift-hyphen; em dash). Copying and pasting works, though: – — |
